WEEIer Charged With Fatal Car Mishap - 11/19 - The man charged with driving drunk and killing a pedestrian in Brighton over the weekend works occasionally on-air at Boston sports radio station WEEI. Rob Finnerty, 26, of Charlestown pleaded not guilty Monday at his arraignment on charges of motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence. Police say he was driving drunk when he hit 19-year-old Michael Riley of Cambridge at the intersection of Soldiers Field Road and Everett Street shortly after 3 AM Sunday. 2 Sues Over Giant Screen Malfunctions - 11/13 - Boston PBSer Channel 2/WGBH is suing the installer and manufacturer of its outdoor 30-by-45-foot LED display for breach of contract and failure to honor the warranty. The massive display, known as a digital mural, is marred by dark spots, caused by diodes that switched off when they became too hot. The Boston Globe has more.....

WTKK's Braude Causes "Incident" - 11/13 - State police say he nearly caused an "international incident" when British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was in Boston, but NECN host and WTKK yakker Jim Braude is taking his traffic citation before a judge later this month. The prime minister was leaving the JFK Library and heading to Cambridge last April when Braude and his black SUV pulled a big no-no and nearly drove head-on into the dignitary's escort. JRC To Shutter Two CT Newspapers - 11/11 - The Hartford Courant is reporting that two Connecticut newspapers owned by the Journal Register Company - the Bristol Press and the New Britain Herald - will be shuttered in January because the papers aren't profitable and they can't find buyers for the paper. Bristol will still have local news covered by the Bristol Observer a weekly paper published by the nearby Waterbury Republican newspaper.....

Comcast To Shutter CN8 News - 11/6 - The Philadelphia Inquirer confirms changes at Comcast's CN8 news channel. It'll shutter in Boston, where Comcast has an interest in the New England Cable News Channel, and will become "The Comcast Network" in DC and Philadelphia. A "majority" of its 300 employees will be laid off. In October, DCRTV reported that CN8's "Your Morning" early morning newscast would leave the air by year's end.....

71M Watch Election Coverage - 11/6 - Nearly 71 million viewers watched the United States elect its first African American president, across 14 television networks Tuesday night. CNN's 13.3 million viewers is not only the biggest audience in the cable net's 28-year history but also marks the first time the cable news network made a clean sweep of all the broadcast and cable networks on election night. WEEI Slammed For Election Gag - 11/5 - A spokesman for Massachusetts Secretary Of State William Galvin criticized two talk radio hosts who told listeners that the election had been rescheduled from yesterday to today after a number of people called the Massachusetts Election Division to complain. According to Galvin's spokesman, Brian McNiff, broadcasters John Dennis and Gerry Callahan said on their morning radio show on WEEI-AM that the election had been pushed back a day. Campaign Ads Produce Big Dough For Boston TVers - 11/4 - Boston viewers probably won't miss the daily deluge of TV political ads, but local stations that benefitted from the bonanza sure will. One estimate put the political ad spending in the Boston broadcast TV market as high as $35 million this year - largely driven by the battles over the Bay State ballot questions and the hotly contested New Hampshire Senate race between incumbent John Sununu and and former Granite State Governor Jeanne Shaheen. Gamere's Voting Dilema - 10/31 - From the Boston Herald: "Former Hub sports announcer Bob Gamere may be accused of dabbling in hardcore kiddie porn, but he's still a patriot. Though not even trusted by a federal judge to greet trick-or-treaters at the door of his Brookline apartment tomorrow night, the Great Gamere has asked to be sprung from house arrest Tuesday from 10 AM to noon to cast his vote for president at the Devotion Elementary School... It was one year ago today the FBI executed a search warrant at the home of the former Channel 7 sports anchor and host of "Candlepins For Cash," seizing a Compaq computer, Internet printouts, e-mail addresses, notes, a bedroom file cabinet, and a Comcast bill, according to court documents released today".....

"Dude" To Replace "Vixen" At NESN - 10/30 - After a nationwide search, NESN has finally found a replacement for "SportsDesk" vixen Hazel Mae - and it's a dude! Cole Wright, sports director of WVLA, the NBC affiliate in Baton Rouge LA, and a former minor-league pitcher, will take over for the departed Hazel next month. Wright will anchor "SportsDesk" and host the station's sports news programming. The Boston Herald has more.....

Big Loss For CBS - 10/30 - CBS has reported a $12.5 billion third-quarter loss after writing down the value of its radio and television stations by $14.1 billion. Bloomberg has more.....

Christian Science Monitor To End Print Edition - 10/27 - The Christian Science Monitor, which is known for its international and analytic news coverage, said today that it will no longer print a daily newspaper, but instead will transfer most content online and publish a weekly edition. The moves, expected to happen in April 2009, are meant to save money and rejuvenate the website of a publication based in Boston, and the moves come as many newspapers struggle with circulation declines as readers and ad dollars migrate from the printed page to the internet. Robert Gamere Arrested - 10/24 - Robert Gamere, the Boston sportscaster who hosted the local TV show "Candlepins For Cash'' through most of the 1970s, was arrested on federal charges of transporting and possessing child pornography. The Boston Globe has more.....

Hopkins Faces Rape Charge - 10/24 - Former WRKO yakker Reese Hopkins, who was laid off last week from his midmorning radio slot, was ordered held without bail today and will be transported to New York City to face charges that he raped a 12-year-old girl, according to the New York district attorney's office and police. Hopkins, 39, is charged with one count of first-degree rape and one count of second-degree rape, said Manhattan district attorney spokeswoman Jennifer Kushner. The rape allegedly occurred four years ago. New York police Detective Martin Speechley said the victim, who was 12 at the time of the alleged rape, was visiting a friend’s apartment in Manhattan when Hopkins allegedly raped her. Continuing Slump At NY Times, Affects Globe - 10/23 - The New York Times posted a quarterly loss from continuing operations on Thursday, hurt by charges for job cuts and said it is looking for ways to reduce its debt. The company, which reported a 16 percent drop in advertising revenue at its news media group, also said it might write down as much as $150 million at its New England operations, where it owns the Boston Globe, underscoring the dismal state of newspaper advertising. Bob Lobel Leaves Hospital - 10/23 - Bob Lobel, the legendary Boston sports guy who took a buyout in April from Channel 4/WBZ, is expected to leave New England Baptist Hospital today after a nine-day stay following back surgery, his second in five months. “I'm doing the best I can,” he said from his hospital bed. So reports News Blues.....

Hartford DTV Test Planned - 10/22 - TVNewday tells us that many of Hartford's analog TV signals will be shut off in early December to let TV viewers see if they're ready to receive only digital TV signals, which will only be available after the February 19, 2009 analog TV nationwide shutoff. Test participants include NBC, Telemundo, Ion, and a group of public TV stations.....

Entercom Cuts Boston - 10/17 - Budget cuts at Entercom have resulted in the departure of about 10 at the firm's Boston radio cluster. Radio And Records, Reese Hopkins has exited middays at talk WRKO, with the syndicated Laura Ingraham filling the shift. WRKO morning producers Rich Teter and Andrew Stecker are out, according to the Boston Herald, as are the national sales department's Donald St. Sauveur and WRKO and WEEI marketing director Laura Rieder. R&R has also learned that Dave DiGiando, producer of "The Hill-Man Morning Show" on active rocker WAAF, was let go.....

Severin Feuds With Imus - 10/16 - WTKK (96.9 FM) host Jay Severin - a staunch defender of Don Imus during the "nappy headed hos" scandal and a longtime regular guest on his show - won’t go on the I-Man's program anymore because he's tired of being insulted. Severin went on "Imus in the Morning" last Thursday to talk presidential politics. During their exchange, the cranky cowboy called Severin a "moron." The Boston Herald has more.....

Sean Davey To Head CC In Worcester - 10/13 - Clear Channel names Sean Davey market manager for the the firm's Worcester MA radio cluster. Davey, who replaces Mike Schaus, will continue to serve as market manager for CC in nearby Springfield MA.....

Slumping Market Stalls CBS Radio Sale - 10/13 - DCRTV is told by reliable industry sources that the sale of those CBS radio stations in mid-sized and small markets like Hartford won't happen. At least until maybe late 2009 - at the earliest. Because of the current stock crisis, and the severe tightening of the credit market, radio companies that have been and are still solid - a la Bonneville, Emmis, Entercom, and Greater Media - can't secure the backing of big lending institutions for a purchase. That's not to say there won't be some more cuts at CBS, but folks still working at CBS Radio will still be working for CBS for a good while, anyway, we hear.....

Slumping Market Could Seriously Affect Sirius XM - 10/13 - DCRTV hears rumblings that the slumping stock market and the tightening credit market will also have a major impact on the recently-merged Sirius XM. The economic downtown could seriously scuttle head Mel Karmazin's expectations for big Christmas retail sales of satellite radios and service contracts. And make it increasingly difficult for the firm to handle debt payments into the new year. Look for a rocky road in 2009, we're told.....

Buckley Makes Hartford Cuts - 10/13 - Buckley budget cuts in Hartford. Mary Jones leaves talker WDRC-AM and Doug Taylor leaves oldies WDRC-FM. Jones is being replaced by syndicated Glenn Beck and afternooner Taylor is being replaced by middayer Larry Wells. About six others got pink slips, too, we hear.....

Bob Cousy Gone From CSN - 10/10 - Bob Cousy will not be a part of the Celtics' television broadcast team this season after Comcast SportsNet decided not to retain the 80-year-old basketball legend, the Worcester Telegram reports.....

Kiss 108 To iPhone - 10/9 - Boston's Kiss 108, WXKS, is among 12 Clear Channel radio stations nationwide that can now be heard via the iPhone-oriented iheartmusic.com service.....

Liz Walker Leaving 4 - 10/2 - Liz Walker is leaving WBZ-TV in December for good after nearly three decades years at the station, the latest of several high-profile personalities to depart Channel 4, the station confirmed today. Walker, an ordained minister, anchored Channel 4's news for 25 years before she stepped down in 2005 to focus on her ministry and host "Sunday With Liz Walker." But the show wasn’t delivering the ratings the station had hoped for, sources told the Boston Herald.....

New GM For 7 - 10/1 - Channel 7/WHDH's new general manager won't talk about Randi Goldklank - who quit the plum post after an embarrassing, drunken episode at Logan Airport - but hopes she's doing well. "I can't comment on that subject at all," Chris Wayland told the Boston Herald after the station announced he'll take over as station GM and vice president November 1.....

Sliwa To Do WTKK Show - 9/30 - RadioInfo.com tells us that NYC WABCer Curtis Sliwa will do a "live and local" show for Boston. He'll start on 10/1 on Greater Media's FM talker in Boston, WTKK at 96.9. The hours will be very late for the longtime morning man at WABC - 10 PM to 1 AM. Curtis says "WTKK is giving me a chance to do live and local radio in Boston, where I can continue to take it from the suites to the streets, and be raw and real." He'll follow author and journalist Michele McPhee (7 PM to 10 PM), and lead into the syndicated Phil Hendrie from Talk Radio Network. Greater Media may feel that Guardian Angels founder Sliwa already has some recognition in Boston due to the local chapter of the Angels. WTKK will run the Laura Ingraham show on Sunday nights from 10 PM to 1 AM.....

Julie Donaldson Returns To 7 - 9/30 - Julie Donaldson, the Channel 7/WHDH sports reporter who's been off the air since she was assaulted by her former boyfriend in June, is returning to work. Donaldson met yesterday with WHDH News Director Linda Miele, and was given the green light to resume her duties at the station. Her first assignment will be covering the Patriots. WPRI Sale Approved - 9/29 - Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch has approved the $2 million sale of WRNI-AM (1290) in Providence by Boston University to the WRNI Foundation.....

Hartford's 20 Drops CW Branding - 9/27 - Like many other Tribune-owned stations, Channel 20/WTXX in Hartford has officially dropped the "CW20" brand, which makes reference to the low-rated CW network. WTXX has began using the "TXX" logo on-air. It has been on their website since the beginning of September.....

Zito Gone From WXLO - 9/26 - Radio-Info.com tells us that WXLO (104.5 FM) in Boston loses morning co-host Zito, who opts not to renew his contract.....

NBC Takes WVIT Off Market - 9/26 - Sources tell FTVLive that NBC has taken Hartsord's WVIT-TV off the market for now. A combination of not being able to get their price and the credit crunch put the sale of that station on hold. NBC didn't need another fire sale after the WTVJ/Miami deal. Meantime the source says, construction of WVIT's digital facility is progressing nicely.....

Novello Leaves BRU - 9/23 - Chris Novello resigns his program director post with Brown Broadcasting's alternative rock WBRU in Providence after seven years with the station. Portland radio vet Wendell Clough will assume his duties in the interim.....

Alleged Attacker Of WESXer Turns Self In - 9/22 - From Radio-Info.com: 20-year-old Gavin Scott turned himself into police in New York Sunday night, after police released an edited version of a surveillance video that was still shocking to watch. WESX (1230 AM ) Boston talk personality Pelagio de la Cruz was in the Bronx over the weekend, visiting his children, when he was robbed and hit eight times with a baseball bat. Scott has been charged with attempted murder, assault, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. de la Cruz was unconscious after the attack, and may lose an eye. More in the Boston Globe.....

10 Tops Providence TV News Race - 9/22 - From The Phoenix: Just how difficult is it for the competitors of Providence's Channel 10 to overcome the perennial ratings leader in local TV news? So much so that WJAR still beat the combined ratings of Channels 6 and 12, for the period between 6:45 and 7 AM this past Wednesday -- even though the NBC station's on-air personnel had left the set due to what turned out to be a false fire alarm. Channel 10 scored a 5.1 for that rating period, while 6 and 12 got a combined 4.7. The typical recent ratings for the same period are 7 for WJAR, 2 for WPRI, and 1 for WLNE, according to Channel 10 GM Lisa Churchville.....

Boston Radio Host Beaten In NYC - 9/19 - A Boston-area radio talk show host was viciously beaten with a baseball bat during a robbery in front of a Bronx apartment building, according to New York City police, who released a harrowing surveillance video today of the attack. Pelagio de la Cruz, 52, who hosts a Spanish-language call-in show on WESX in Chelsea, was attacked in front of a building in the University Heights neighborhood shortly after 3:30 AM Sunday when he returned after an evening out. He was in New York visiting his children, who live in the building with their mother, his estranged wife, police said. More from the Boston Globe.....

Lobel To "Guest Host" On WODS Mornings - 9/19 - Boston TV veteran Bob Lobel will debut on CBS Radio's Boston oldies outlet WODS, 103.3 FM, as morning show "guest host." He joins Karen Blake on Monday, 9/22. Blake has spent the past three years handling afternoon drive on Oldies 103.3. Earlier this week, Dale Dorman left his post as morning show host after five years.....

Ion To Flip To Digital Early - 9/19 - DCRTV hears that group TV station owner Ion is working with cable and satellite providers to set up a multi-market switch from analog to digital. To take place in October, four months before the national all-digital TV deadline in February 2009. The flip will include Ion's stations in DC, NYC, LA, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Hartford.....

6 Extends "Good Morning Providence" - 9/19 - Channel 6/WLNE in Providence extend its "Good Morning Providence" broadcast, that now runs from 5 AM to 7 AM, with an extra hour, from 7 AM to 8 AM, beginning 9/29. The Providence Business Journal has more.....

Dale Dorman Leaves WODS Mornings - 9/15 - Dale Dorman is gone from mornings at CBS Radio's oldies WODS (103.3 FM). The trade pubs say that Dorman is still at the station and will soon be heard on the weekends. Dorman has been in Boston radio for nearly 40 years. He joined WODS in 2003 after a 23-year run at WXKS and a decade at WRKO. JJ Wright moves from nights to do mornings at WODS. For now. Stay tuned.....

Former Vineyard Gazette Publisher John Walter Dies - 9/15 - John Walter, one of the founding editors of USA Today, died in Massachusetts on 9/11 of complications after surgery for a facial nerve disorder. He was 61. Walter, of Edgartown, was the former editor and publisher of the Vineyard Gazette. The Boston Globe has more.....

Marathon For 103.3's Karen Blake - 9/14 - Karen Blake has waited her whole life to cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon. When she finally does it, on 9/21, the "oldies" WODS-FM (103.3) DJ shouldn't be too exhausted. She might even be in high heels. Because the "marathon" the weekday afternoon host will be finishing will be the final five-mile leg of the 20th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. The Boston Globe has more.....

PRO Ratings Controversy Continues - 9/9 - From Providence Business News: A local media personality who said he was fired to make way for controversial talk show host John DePetro is offering to pay for a lie-detector test so the embattled WPRO-AM personality can prove he had nothing to do with fraudulent Arbitron diaries that led to a revision in spring ratings for the Providence-Warwick-Pawtucket market. "I will pay for a polygraph for John DePetro to clear his name," said Dave Barber, reporter and talk show host for Capitol TV at the Rhode Island. State House.....

CBS's 4 Hypes CBS Eatery - 9/8 - From the Boston Herald: Channel 4/WBZ is reeling from massive cuts and was the only Boston station that didn't send a reporter to the political conventions, but it has devoted over-the-top news coverage and newsroom resources to promoting tonight's opening of a local CBS-owned restaurant. Channel 4 anchors David Wade and Paula Ebben reported throughout the week from the CBS Scene Restaurant and Bar at Patriot Place in Foxboro, a joint venture between the Kraft Group and CBS. During one newscast, Wade gushed that it's "an incredible place." In another, he fawned over the "crispy crab cake" and Kobe beef sliders. "Really great food here at the CBS Scene," Wade told viewers.....

Sara Underwood To 25 - 9/3 - Former Channel 4/WBZ anchor Sara Underwood has been hired by Boston's cross-town Channel 25/WFXT as a weekend anchor and reporter. WBZ decided earlier this year not to renew Underwood’s contract after eight years. There's more from the Boston Herald.....

Voiceover Great Don LaFontaine Dies - 9/2 - Don LaFontaine died in LA on 9/1 of complications form a collapsed lung. He was 68. Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the "King Of Voiceovers." Aside from being the preeminent voice in the movie trailer industry, he also worked as the voice of "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Insider," as well as for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS, and the Cartoon Network. He voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, and Coke. His latest work was for Geico. NESN's Hazel Mae To MLB Net - 8/31 - Former NESN sports siren Hazel Mae will be the new face of the MLB Network, so reports the Boston Herald. Mae, who left the Red Sox- station in June after four years on the "SportsDesk," had been in talks with Channel 4. WBZ-TV reportedly wanted Mae to be the weekend sports anchor, but they couldn't agree on a salary and, besides, she had her eye on the lead anchor spot vacated by Bob Lobel.....

Former WSARer Turns Down DA Gig - 8/26 - From the Fall River Herald News: Former WSAR radio personality Keri Rodrigues will not be accepting a post as assistant to the director of the Community Affairs Division for District Attorney Sam Sutter after claiming years of physical and verbal intimidation suffered at the hands of a radio station employee. Rodrigues had intended to begin work on child abuse prevention and senior abuse education and prevention on 8/18, at the DA's office but that start date was pushed back to 8/25. However, Rodrigues did not report for work Monday morning. After reaching her on her cell phone late Monday afternoon, Rodrigues described a hostile work environment at her former radio station that forced her to not only leave her radio job but also give up her new profession with the District Attorney's Office.....

Herald Talks To Donaldson's Alleged Batterer - 8/23 - A Bay State advocate for abused women said the jailhouse love letters written by Ivan Lattimore - the professional slamball player charged with beating Channel 7/WHDH sports reporter Julie Donaldson - illustrate classic batterer behavior. "He is taking no responsibility in these letters for her being hurt," said Toni Troop, spokeswoman for Jane Doe Inc. "Despite his efforts to present himself an as easy-going guy who simply loves her, the facts suggests otherwise." In an exclusive jailhouse interview with the Boston Herald, Lattimore, 30, said he will always love Donaldson and denied hitting her.....

Ron Borges, a 24-year veteran of the Boston Globe and Patriots beat writer, will serve as a columnist for weei.com covering the Patriots and national football news. Storms Knock WUMD Off Air - 8/14 - WUMD, the University Of Massachusetts' Dartmouth 10,000-watt FM radio station, was knocked off the air Monday when severe thunderstorms hit the region and damaged the station's transmitter. Ratings Fraud Affects WPRO - 8/12 - In what radio insiders say is a rare occurrence, Arbitron revised ratings for the local morning market after it was discovered that a media-related household in East Greenwich apparently tried to cheat by turning in six ratings diaries. The greatest change in the Spring 2008 ratings for the Providence-Warwick-Pawtucket market in the lucrative morning drive period - Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 AM - when WPRO-AM fell four slots from fourth place to ninth place among listeners ages 25-to-54, based on rankings released by the station. Line-up Changes For 890 ESPN - 8/11 - In a move to expand local programming and help meet Boston's appetite for local sports talk, 890 ESPN Radio has announced a new afternoon and drive time program line-up. Beginning Thursday, 8/14, Channel 5/WCVB news and sports anchor Bob Halloran will team with current 890 WAMG sports reporter Mike Salk for "Salk And Halloran" which will run weekdays between noon and 2 PM. A new drive time show, "Lew And Mike," hosted by the sports talk team of Lew Goldstein and Mike Vallee will air between 4 PM and 6 PM. The Lew and Mike show had run on AM 1510 The Zone. Halloran's entry into the station lineup is a welcome home of sorts. Before joining WCVB's "SportsCenter 5," Halloran was at ESPNews where he spent three years as an anchor and writer for ESPN.com. Salk has been 890 ESPN's Red Sox reporter for the past two years, and will continue in that role. He also can be heard on ESPN's national programming.....

Arbitron To Re-Issue Providence Ratings - 8/6 - From Radio Online: Arbitron said Tuesday that it would re-issue its spring market report for Providence on 8/11 after six metro diaries were found to have been returned from a media-affiliated household. The revised results is expected to "substantially" affect estimates for Citadel's number one-rated new talk WPRO-AM in some demos and dayparts. Estimates for several other stations in the market may also be affected "to a minor extent," said Arbitron.....

Talks Underway To Renew O&A's Deal With Satrad - 8/6 - From FMQB: Talks are taking place between Sirius XM and Opie and Anthony (right) for a contract renewal, revealed super agent Bob Eatman on their morning show yesterday. The negotiations come less than a week after Sirius XM satellite radio CEO Mel Karmazin appeared on their program to reassure O&A that he wants them to be a part of the newly merged satellite radio companies. Eatman also revealed that CBS Radio is waiting to see if O&A's new Sirius XM deal will keep them on terrestrial radio. If it does, then he suggested that O&A will likely make a return to CBS rocker WYSP in Philadelphia. O&A are currently heard on CBS rocker WBCN in Bsoton, plus CBS rockers in NYC and Cleveland.....

Westport To Lose Boston's Fox25 - 8/5 - Cable company Charter Communications next month will drop WFXT-TV, the Dedham-based Fox affiliate television station, from the lineup for Westport MA customers. News of the change comes amid ongoing complaints about Charter. The St. Louis company is taking steps to boost local customer service, the subject of frustration for many residents. Charter on Thursday started blacking out primetime network programming on Fox25, which serves the Boston area, and the company plans to drop the station entirely 9/23. That means Westport customers will no longer see Boston's local news programing, which differs from Providence's Fox affiliate, WNAC-TV. SouthCoastToday.com has more.....

CBS Could Unload Hartford Cluster - 8/1 - Yesterday, CBS Radio announced that it'll be selling about 50 "mid-market" radio stations in the near-term. Today, radio trade pub All Access tells us that four CBS stations in Hartford are on an unofficial list of "likely" properties to be unloaded. Including news talk WTIC-AM, adult contemporary WRCH, contemporary hit WZMX, and hot adult contemporary WTIC-FM. Stay tuned.....

Former 7 Announcer Dies - 8/1 - DCRTV hears that Chris Clausen, who was an announcer whose voice was heard on promotions and public service spots for many TV stations, including Channel 7/WHDH a few years ago, died on 7/29 in Orlando after suffering a stroke.....

NPR Buys PRI's PI Division - 8/1 - Public Radio International is selling its Boston-based Public Interactive division to DC-based National Public Radio for an undisclosed price. PI is an application services provider offering tools and services for public radio station websites.....
