Concerning "Sally Starr", "Gene London", "Pixanne" et al; there's no need to settle for faded memories. To get the skinny on all classic Philly kids shows, nobody does it better than Billy Ingram at TVParty.com... If you grew-up around Baltimore, Gary Helton has got you covered at CrabCityKidsTV.com... And for the Nation's Capital boomers, visit KaptainKidshow.com... (8/20/08)

Dave's response: Anybody remember the controversy a few years back when Sally Starr sued a Philadelphia area radio personality for using the "l-word" to describe her? And I don't mean "liberal".....

Stu Nahan as Captain Philadelphia on 48 vs. Wee Willie Webber's Colorful Cartoon Club on 17 vs. Sally Starr on 10 vs. Pixanne on (6?). Truly a great time to be growing up in Burlington County. -- J.J. Gertler (8/20/08)

Dave's response: Yeah, where I lived from 1960 to 1968, Willingboro, was (still is) in Burlington County - NJ's largest county area-wise, I do believe. Sally Starr was on 6 and Pixanne and Gene London were on 10, though.....

Obviously Stu Nahan honed his interviewing skills at Ch. 48 in Philly rather well....remember the immortal interview with Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (an absolute classic!) - - - - - Larry in Luray (8/19/08)

Yes, Jim Vance was on Philly's olr 48. More on WKBS 48 Philly... en.wikipedia.org... I once picked it up in Baltimore on a hot summer night and saw it sign off as FIELD COMMUNICATIONS, apparently owned by Marshall Field dept stores of Chicago. (8/19/08)

Do you remember channel 48 Philly's newscast? One of the reporters....Jim Vance ... Sports, Stu Nahan (who also was Captain Philadelphia before heading to LA) plus a lot of other great broadcasters. They also hosted and aired live pro wrestling from their studios near Philly Intl airport. I remember heading down there to watch the matches with my friends... Ira Mellman (8/19/08)

Dave's response: No, I don't remember Jim on 48.....

... At some point during the 1966-67 school year, got to watch WKBS from Philly fairly often in Leonardtown on the UHF loop of a $149 17" Zenith b&w portable (from EJ Korvettes). (8/19/08)

Dave's response: I loved WKBS, Channel 48 in Philly. Saw it sign on. Was just a tyke in Willingboro NJ. Dad had just bought our first color TV. A Sears floor model with a round picture tube. And a rotory antenna on the roof. Soon after "Star Trek" left NBC's airwaves, it beamed over to WKBS, "Kaiser Broadcasting, Burlington/Philadelphia." Loved the station ID slide back then. Color bars with the "48" in "Kaiser lettering" at the bottom. Some dippy station logo music, too. Remember it oh so well. WKBS lasted until the mid-1980s or so, when Kaiser shut it down rather than sell it off. Good old 48 went dark for a few years until someone started a new station on the channel.....

gee, this all sounds sadly familiar... News breaks too often are news fakes www.nydailynews.com "Ch. 5’s Dari Alexander and Ernie Anastos cut to a "Wendy's Rewind" of her highlights, but it's a low point. Local TV news has a problem. News directors are making it easier to not watch at all, and at times give viewers too many reasons to flip away. Commercials built into newscasts, delayed weather news, overhyped "you won't believe this" news segments that don't deliver, and phony breaking news or exclusive tags on stories - all of these are tactics that erode quality and drive viewers away. The examples are numerous and are all around the dial." (8/18/08)

OK..a friend of mine SWEARS she remembers watching the great Baltimore newsteam of Jerry Turner and Al Sanders on one weekend night back in the early 80's on TV in..PHILADELPHIA !! She says it was on KYW channel 3 which makes sense considering both KYW and WJZ were Group W but did they appear on KYW? If they did I wonder if it was an audition or were they just filling in for somebody. Come to think of it I think Philadelphia's Larry Kane made an appearance or two on WJZ way back when. With that being said I have to wonder if the great, late Jessica Savitch ever did WJZ even just once or did Oprah Winfrey ever do KYW back when both were employed at Group W ? My husband seems to recall hearing that WRC's Jim Vance anchored the news once for NYC's WNBC many years ago and then there is the story about the late George Lewis "Captain Chesapeake" who also played the role as Captain Pitt for WBFF's Pittsburgh's sister station..WPTT only to have the tapes get mixed up so Pittsburgh kids for that one day saw Captain Chesapeake likewise with Baltimore/DC kids with Captain Pitt. On a similar note,...Hearst-Argyle (?) who owns WBAL, I have heard over the years that they try to keep their stations totally seperate. In other words they won't allow say someone from Pittsburgh's WTAE to appear on WBAL or if some major news event takes place say for example in central Pennyslvania, WBAL would send someone there rather than use their Lancaster sister station WGAL for ceoverage.Same thing more/less in Richmond. Even though none of the DC stations have anything to do with the Richmond stations as far as ownership goes some years back I remember being told that there were some "gentlemen's agreement " betwen WRC, WTTG, WJLA and WUSA and WTVR, WRIC, WWBT and WRLH as far as what to to do if some major breaking news event would ever take place in Richmond. If such an event would happen, it would be the DC stations who would feed the news to the network as well as get the credit, not Richmond. Like that massive fire that took place in downtown Richmond some years back...NBC aired the clip and I remember seeing WRC getting credit for it..not WWBT. I assume this agreement doesn't cover the Hampton Roads market since I have seen WTKR, WVEC and WAVY/WVBT get credit on local news feeds if that story has a national interest like the recent Suffolk tornados for example. (8/18/08)

Dave's response: I lived in the NJ suburbs of Philly until 1972 and there were nights when Baltimore's Channel 13 came through like a local. (And, yeah, there were some nights when NYC's WNET/13 came through like a local, too.) Maybe she saw Turner and Sanders in Philadelphia on 13?

It is a shame that fox country which served parts of pa,nj and orange/sullivan county ny has gone back to wgny's ac feed!!!! (8/4/08)

I'm visiting Nassau County, Long Island, this week and have been able to watch television only on a TV set attached to a "rabbit ears" antenna. Every single night this week, about 1 minute after David Letterman's show ended and just seconds into Craig Ferguson's opening monologue, the WCBS-TV signal suddenly disappeared and the screen showed only static. (Meanwhile, every other NYC station continued to be received without any problem.) Channel 2 is either turning off the transmitter or else it's powering down drastically. Does anyone know what's going on? It seems very odd that CBS' flagship station would do this just as an important late-night network program is beginning. If transmitter work is being done, wouldn't one expect Channel 2 to wait until network programming concludes -- or to turn on the station's backup transmitter? (8/2/08)

Black America Web has used this misleading headline Edie Huggins first AA woman to report the news. It seems the internet has taken it and ran with it. The headline is totally inaccurate. She was a beloved and very down the earth news reporter and anchor in Philadelphia, but she was not the first Black reporter or anchor on the air. BAW went for the sensational headline, why? I'll never know. I blog on this and set the record straight. urbanradionation.blogspot.com... Miss Huggins clearly stated that she was hired at WCAU TV, because they were competiting with KYW and their recent hire Trudy Haynes. I believe Malcolm Poindexter, an African American male reporter was on the air at KYW TV before Edie Huggins was also. Check it out, Thanks, Joe (8/1/08)

Hi, I thought you might be interested in reading this article on Bleacher Report: "WPHT's Larry Andersen Suggests Balls Across NY Met Jose Reyes' Nose" bleacherreport.com... Best, bob mantz (7/28/08)

Ah, New Jersey memories… did someone say Kent Manahan? Hubba, Hubba, Jersey Girl!! And the newsblurb about Millenium applying for a non-com FM license in Roosevelt, New Jersey; man, memories upon memories since I grew up on a farm right outside that town (now a Federal Historic District). Originally called Jersey Homesteads (and before that, Paradise Corners), this location outside of Hightstown (1/2 way between Princeton and Freehold of Bruce Springsteen "My Hometown" fame) was an experimental New Deal community established to resettle unemployed (primarily Jewish) garment workers in a planned community that would be formed around light industry (in this case a coat factory) and agriculture. The specific rural area in Central Jersey was chosen because there had been a lengthy history of previous Jewish agricultural colonization in the area funded by the Baron de Hirsch Foundation (which also established one of the first Agricultural Schools a little farther south of Vineland, in Cape May County). The town was named for FDR after his death, and has become a major upscale artists colony and professionals bedroom community. Today it's horse country and still pretty rural, as the town is surrounded by protected parkland on 3 sides. Genghis Cohen, pining for the fjords of Old New Sweden….. (7/28/08)

Kent Manahan: Truly a MILF in her younger days. Having married into a politically-active Republican family no doubt helped with her hiring by NJN. But she has always been a 'professional' and I'll miss seeing her the next time I'm back in NJN's viewing area. And she'll probably enjoy not having the lousy commute, limo or not. (7/17/08)

The only question that begs to be answered regarding Billy Packer's departure from CBS is: Why in the hell did it take 10+ years for CBS to fire his lame ass? He had become a total embarrassment to CBS sports. Good riddance. (7/14/08)

"Brett Favre will be speaking to - of all people - Greta Van Susteren, tonight on Fox News. I didn't even know he was Republican..." - Howard Eskin on WIP/Philadelphia today - just moments ago, in fact... (7/14/08)

NBC is in the process of selling ownership of WTVJ Miami and WVIT Hartford-New Haven. We've been hearing rumors that NBC may be thinking about dumping ownership of WRC D.C. NBC has yet to formally announce whether or not to sell WRC. New owners for WTVJ and WVIT could be decided any day now. The rumors I'm hearing about WVIT... Hearst-Argyle Television, owner of WBAL Baltimore and WCVB Boston may be expressing interest in buying the station. WBAL and WCVB win the news ratings in their respective markets... KCRA Sacramento and KMBC Kansas City are 2 other Heart owned stations I know of that have top-rated local newscasts. B&C article from May 28th... www.broadcastingcable.com... The rumors I'm hearing about WTVJ... Viewers have been echoing the sentiment of Belo Corporation or Cox Enterprises buying the station. Belo or Cox could give the South Florida "bottom dweller" the turn-around it's been needing. KHOU Houston, KING Seattle-Tacoma, WFAA Dallas-Ft. Worth, and WWL New Orleans are 4 Belo owned stations that I know of to have top-rated newscasts... WFTV Orlando, WSB Atlanta, and WSOC Charlotte are 3 Cox owned stations that I know of to have top-rated newscasts. SFLTV.com blogs... www.sfltv.com and www.sfltv.com... These are just rumors I've been hearing and reading about. (7/14/08)

WMTR 1250AM Goes Good Time Oldies: Except for the morning shows, WMTR & WCTC have the same schedules. I assume that the signals would be synced and the stations marketed as one as were WMTR and WWTR previously. Paint for the four towers, the JCP&L electric bill for the 5k day and 7k night signal and the property tax for the WMTR Cedar Knolls transmitter/studio location demand cost-cutting moves. Is the same consolidation going to happen @ GM's WMGQ - 1k New Brunswick and WDHA - 1.2k/Direction Dover? Having seen my first remote radio broadcast in 1950 when WMTR traveled half a mile from its then Park Place studios to the new Morristown Trust Co building on South Street, to living in Fanwood for 37 years with the three local stations going Spanish, religious or off the air, WCTC and WMTR became the local stations though neither expanded its news focus. Of course, many of the towns are adding LP local emergency am stations that broadcast little except NOAA out of NYC and the same info loop about not parking on the streets during snow emergencies, smothering DXing more than HD. (7/9/08)

WCTC 1450AM Goes Oldies: Greater Media is just saving money. GM's WMTR 1250AM in Morristown has been classic oldies for several years and was also carried into WCTC's New Brunswick on daytimer 1170. 1170 is now LMA'd to MultiCultural(?) and jumping to 600 watts from 243. The WCTC and WMTR web sites are BOTH under re-construction...each going Good Time Oldies. This will give the format an extended reach with WCTC's fulltime 1 k signal covering from Edison south. Can you help me recall the name of the African American journalist who was on the local news for Philly on 6 ABC who died of cancer around the early 1990’s? I believe he was an anchor. I am drawing a total blank. If you can help, I soooo thank you as it has been bothering me for a long time, and I just can’t remember. Thank you very much, Cheryl (6/15/08)

Holy Blue Hannah, I just saw that pic (left) of Stern on the Wall Street Journal link. What the hell happened to him? The hair looks fake, his face is melting like a Milky Way... he almost looks like Christopher Lloyd with a prosthetic mask. TV lights never make anyone look THAT bad. What's holding him together, bond-o? (6/3/08)

www.rnntv.com... RNN TV seems to have strayed from " all infomercial, some news" programming. They have now added reruns of " Law and Order - Criminal Intent" in between local news blocks and "Richard French Live". (5/27/08)

HD (local news) updates and predictions... Already in high-def... KYW-TV/Ch. 3 and WPSG-TV/Ch. 57 (CBS/CW Philly)... WABC-TV/Ch. 7 (ABC New York)... WCBS-TV/Ch. 2 (CBS New York)... WCVB-TV/Ch. 5 (ABC Boston)... WNBC-TV/Ch. 4 (NBC New York)... WPIX-TV/Ch. 11 (CW New York)... WPVI-TV/Ch. 6 (ABC Philly)... WTXF-TV/Ch. 29 (FOX Philly)... WUSA-TV/Ch. 9 (CBS DC)... Soon-to-be in HD... WBFF-TV/Ch. 45 (FOX Baltimore)... WHDH-TV/Ch. 7 and WLVI-TV/Ch. 56 (NBC/CW Boston)... WJLA-TV/Ch. 7 (ABC DC)... WTTG-TV/Ch. 5 (FOX DC)... Both FOX affiliates are slated to debut HD News sometime in May, 2008. I don't know if both stations decided to wait until right after the Idol season finale or not... in hopes of getting strong lead-ins. If they're not in HD quite yet, they'll likely be debuting it any day now. It was recently reported that WJLA is slated to debut HD news by late Summer or early Fall. Rumors have circulated that WHDH and WLVI may be going HD by late Summer or early Fall... Ed Ansin has yet to formally announce it. My predictions... I don't believe viewers will be seeing HD news quite yet on the remaining NBC owned and CBS owned stations... giving their current financial situations. NBC's mediocre performance, and CBS' recent layoffs. Those NBC owned stations being... WCAU-TV/Ch. 10 (Philly), WRC-TV/Ch. 4 (DC), and WVIT-TV/Ch. 30 (Hartford-New Haven). NBC is also in the process of selling ownership of WVIT. Those CBS owned stations being... WBZ-TV/Ch. 4 and WSBK-TV/Ch. 38 (Boston), and WJZ-TV/Ch. 13 (Baltimore). The FOX owned stations... WFXT-TV/Ch. 25 (Boston), and WNYW-TV/Ch. 5 and WWOR-TV/Ch. 9 (New York) have yet to formally announce plans to debut HD news. Baltimore market - With WBFF going HD first, I'm looking at either WMAR-TV/Ch. 2 (ABC) or WBAL-TV/Ch. 11 (NBC) going HD second. Hartford-New Haven market - Too close to call at this time. Providence market - I'm looking at WJAR-TV/Ch. 10 (NBC) going HD first. Boston market - I'm looking at WHDH and WLVI going HD second. (5/22/08)

Re: "Hot Damn for WOR! Can the return of Carlton Fredericks and Pegeen Fitzgerald be far behind (even if they're both dead....)" Carlton can stay dead as he and his now-deceased listeners weren't helped by his quack remedies. However, it would be nice to hear Ed and Pegeen again; broadcasting from his deathbed, Ed Fitzgerald was more coherent and livelier than certain pompous broadcasters today. (5/3/08)

Good to see John Gambling back in the morning on WOR. For those of you who don't know, he's the third generation of that family to host the mornings there. It was absolutely disgraceful how they treated him when he was unceremoniously bounced from his long-time perch on that station, and his return just somehow feels right. While WOR skews to the right on the political and age spectrum (appealing mostly to dead or dying people in the car accident called God's other waiting room known as Central New Jersey), at least they've managed to keep local and live during the week and overnights (now if they could only do something about Sunday nights, yechhhh!) I know the weekday 9-4 programming is mostly cash cow city, but at least it means they can afford to put local drive time programming on at both ends. I drive-time DX WOR down here in rural Prince William all the time, and they still sound pretty good for what they aim to do; local opinion and news done with a view towards keeping viable in the New York 60 mile radius regional market. Now if they could only bring Joe Franklin back on the Sat-Sun overnight…..Genghis Cohen, still yearning for a decent bagel now that Giant has cut back operations…. (4/30/08)

Rock radio god, Norm Winer, CBS RADIO Vice President of Adult Rock Programming, was named the PD of wnew.com stream/ WWFS HD-2 which resurrects the defunct WNEW-FM as an archive of actual broadcasts, as well as current and classic rock, and currect and classic alternative rock. New York radio is coming alive! They are so lucky to have K-Rock come back, The recent sign on of WRXP 101.9, and now WNEW.com and HD especially with Norm Winer at the helm. Makes me proud of my first name Just one question, though is Norm Winer still overseeing WXRT, and WTGB The Globe? -Norm from Boston (4/17/08)

Very sad. Will (Spens) was a news anchor for WNBC Radio and WNWS Radio (the FM station that carried NBC's all-news radio network 1975-1977) when I knew him. VERY sad...... (4/4/08)

Damn... things are getting stupider w/the canning of Crys Quimby from WCBS! She and I have crossed paths many times over the years. She's also a CBS vet, having been at KNX for ages. Fuckin' shame. She's a pro at the all-news biz. Would love to see her land on Idaho Avenue (at DC's WTOP). I had to get that off my chest. She and (Chris) Core would make a killer news/talk combo. (3/19/08)

Dave, much is said on this site about the degree to which radio stations are doing well. As a point of reference, I had a discussion this week with a gentleman from New York's WCBS Radio. This person indicated that things are getting so tight that 1) the top salesperson there is making about half of what he did two years ago and 2) news director Crys Quimby was recently - and reluctantly - let go, in a cost-cutting move. Happy Birthday Don Pardo! (In that "Live At Five" clip from 1987, he intros Jack Cafferty, Sue Simmons and Al Roker on WNBC-TV. Where are THEY now?) -- Well, Sue is still anchoring on WNBC! Born on Feburary 22, 1918 - longtime NBC staff announcer and voice of Saturday Night Live - Don Pardo! He turns 90 today and you'll hear him this weekend, as SNL gears-up with all-new episodes, now that the writers' strike is over. He has been the voice of SNL since it began in 1975, except for a handful of episodes. Here's a clip from the 1980s, as he opens the NYC afternoon newscast "Live At Five" on WNBC-TV. www.youtube.com (2/22/08)

A troubled young man called into the Imus in the Morning program on Monday and uttered at least three explitives, two of which were clearly heard over-the-air on the I-man's flagship station, WABC. Show engineer Lou Rufino falsely told Imus that he had hit the dump button the first two times. The caller used the S-word at about 9:15 in the morning, after RFD-TV and many stations cut away from the show. Going into commercials, the WABC audio sounded distorted, an indication that the delay button had finally been utilized, perhaps too late to incur Mr. Imus an FCC fine for indecency. (2/11/08)

Regis Philbin said several years ago that K-ROCK should become K_COUNTRY---perhaps CBS finally came to the conclusion that country is the way to go.FRESH, the new "cbs-fm" and a country 92.3 will keep 'ltw's ratings down!!!! Hey Everyone... Someone got into my email and wrote a ridiculous email from my account and I just wanted to apologize to anyone who may have received it. I am figuring out what exactly happened and I will deal with it like George W. Bush would--swiftly and without any real thought. Hey Dave - Definitely take this one w/a grain of salt and that it is mere rumor and speculation BUT ... Howard was discussing on his show this AM that K ROCK may be switching format to country. Sad news about WLIR changing to an ESPN radio relay. From what I've read, WLIR was a kick-ass alternative rock station similar to an earlier era WHFS or even a current era WRNR. The World Internet Radio Network would like to welcome The Matt and Huggy show to its digital airwaves. The Matt and Huggy show formerly on WYSP in Philadelphia have now braced the digital world and will now be doing there show live on The World Internet Radio Network. On September 13, when WYSP/Philadelphia dropped its Free FM Talk format in order to flip back to Active Rock, most of the air staff was let go, including 11-year WYSP veterans Matt & Huggy. The duo started out in 1996 doing weekends and over nights, then enjoyed a long run with the evening shift before they were given a 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. talk show to go along with WYSP's Free FM format. But after settling into their new time slot and getting adjusted to hosting a two-hour talk show with no music (which they did for over a year), Matt & Huggy became casualties of the format flip. However, rather than sitting around and getting stale while waiting for their next radio opportunity, Matt & Huggy decided to take advantage of technology such as podcasting and MySpace as a way to grow their fan base and keep their radio skills sharp. Plus, the outpouring of encouragement and disappointment they received from fans when the show was canceled made it an easy decision to keep the show alive in some form. You can now listen to the Matt and Huggy show on the World Internet Radio Network Monday-Friday from 9 -11pm eastern with the best of the Matt and Huggy show Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with live shows Tuesday and Thursday's To listen to the show go to www.wirnonline.com and click on listen now...
