"Idea for suits at CBS...give Norris steroids until he grows stones." Dude, taking steroids shrinks your stones. You just feel like they're bigger because of the 'roid rage. (6/25/08)

Maryland Public Television only applied for a mild power increase for WFPT-DT 28, which does serve a significant portion of the Washington market while WETA would have liked to have applied for the max 1000kw I bet, but couldn't because of that. Apparently MPT isn't playing nice with WETA? Both WHUT & WNVC applied for significantly better signals whan WETA will have unless something changes. I noticed that MPT did apply for a significant power increase for its Hagerstown DTV station and also its Annapolis station, but not Baltimore or Frederick. Hmmm. Also, the thing about Verizon outages that ticks me off the most is that after you tell the annoying voice analysis device your problem is a loss of service problem, you immediately are told to go to such and such website to solve it! DUH! Makes you want to just THROW the FRIKKIN PHONE ACROSS THE ROOM or shout obscenities at the computer voice (that was my choice.) :-) (6/25/08)

Dave's response: I have a friend who has Verizon DSL and was on the phone with a service rep about problems she was having with her internet connection. He told her to unplug her phone line, upon which she immediately lost connection with the service rep, since she was talking to him on her Verizon landline. Duh.....

Verizon DSL can't take all the blame for Wednesday's HSI outage. I don't have any inside information, but all Comcast customers in Calvert County were without internet from around 9:30 am until 2:00 pm on Wednesday as well. I haven't yet seen any mention of this outage on the geek forums. (6/25/08)

"I wonder how long it'll take Gutter Helmet, etc. to make the trek to Idaho Avenue?" They already have. One of Jim Farley's many strengths as a programmer is to recognize and capitalize on his competitors mistakes. The addition of Chris Core is another example of that. Big win for TOP, on the air and in the bank. (6/25/08)

Wanna be a guest DJ on the old WKYS/WRC? www.98wrc.com (6/25/08)

Oh, forgot to mention, it took me more than 45 minutes of wasted time before Verizon owned up to their problem, and yes, I'm "borrowing" my neighbor's Comcast Highspeed connection via WIFI, hence my ability to post that Verizon DSL is down up and down the east coast here at DCRTV. Thank god for "semi-free" Wifi. :-) (6/25/08)

WETA-DT 27 has asked the FCC for permission move to DT-51, which is being abandoned by WDCW-DT next year (they're returning to channel 50). WETA is unable to boost their channel 27 signal any further due to interference concerns with WFPT-DT 28 in Frederick. WWPX-DT 12 in Martinsburg has also asked to move to DT-51, but from the tower site of WINC-FM in Winchester, in an apparent attempt to get their signal into DC. My prediction: WETA gets 51, because the WWPX application does not appear to be properly spaced to WDCW... Those are the only ones in the DC area, though there are some in other areas. If you're interested, I've set up a whole page on my site for them, here: www.rabbitears.info... - Trip (6/25/08)

Verizon doesn't publicize this, but basically the entire northeast DSL service is down since last night, should be a news story, but Verizon hides this kind of embarassing info forever as does Comcast too I'm sure. Anyway, by the time the service is back up from NYC to DC, I guess Verizon hopes it will be a non-story? Sounds like a plan to me. :-( (6/25/08)

Well it was the ex con and the future con on HFS Wednesday afternoon, and after hearing it, it's clear that ex con Ed Norris doesn't have the stones he'd like us all to believe he has. Sheila Dixon sits there in the studio, and Norris refuses to quiz her on the current grand jury investigation and the claims of corruption and ethics violations swirling around her. He again talks about his own "experience" and how he was threatened with being put in prison and "not being able to see his kid grow up." Was he so concerned about his son when he was using a police fund for widows and police families to pay for all the screwing he did with six different women? Norris would like us all to believe he simply lied on a mortgage application. Maybe he pleaded guilty to avoid the embarrassment of having all the women take the witness stand. If he did nothing wrong, why did Martin O'Malley force him to repay some of the money to the fund? And then at the end of the Norris show, Maynard calls listeners "dumbasses" because they were angry Norris didn't do the job that he should have done and quizzed Dixon. This is why the Norris program is crashing and burning. He doesn't understand his audience, and he can't satisfy their expectations of him as a talk host. Look beyond the shaved head, the tattoos, the motorcycle, and the bragging and posturing and what you have is a pussy who probably was at his best when walking a beat in New York. Dixon is playing the game now of blaming the media. She votes for her sister's company, votes for her campaign manager's company, and votes for the guy she's screwing. Duh…anything ethically wrong with that? I guess not to Norris who himself has a morally bankrupt compass. Norris was on the job just days when he started raiding the fund, and his first purchase was to stock up the liquor cabinet in his home. He and Dixon must be comfortable in their cozy pod. Both got into trouble for living well beyond their means, and relying on other people's money to support the lifestyle. Norris, after years of a six-figure salary was still so broke, he couldn't even afford a down payment on a modest priced Baltimore home. He called the man who sent him to prison a "rat bastard." That man was the same one who also focused in, and rightly so, on other crooks, including the soon-to-be incarcerated Tom Bromwell. City politics is rampant with corruption, and minority owned firms who exist on paper only to extort money from honest, hard working businessmen. It would seem the only people who buy the Norris fantasy are Norris and his old boss, Bob Ehrlich. Ehrlich's selection of the crooked cop is the biggest disappointment of his term as governor and will likely haunt him again if he chooses to run again. Today was my last shot at giving Norris a chance. I'm going back to the AM dial where I don't always agree with the slant, but there is a level of intelligence and quality among the hosts on that band. Idea for suits at CBS – cut dead weight Maynard free. And give Norris steroids until he grows stones. The Norris shovel of wisdom smells like the same pile of crap you see in the shovel of the guy behind the elephants in the circus. A circus is entertaining. Phillips and Labrozzi have to be kicking themselves. My how those legendary call letters have been bastardized. Their idiocy is why I got out of that place! (6/25/08)

Yes yes yes!!! Hazzah! THIS is the Mike O'Meara Show I was looking forward to. A good mix of Buzz, Robb's biting wit and sarcasm, the versatility to get away with being intelligent and nice, and also mean when warranted, and MOST importantly, the FUNNY that is inherent whenever the great talent of Mike O'Meara is given free reign with one of his great characters. The return of Cousin Luigi made my day... Mike, don't be afraid to bring back some of the great old stuff, and just see where it goes in this new environment. More voices and characters please! GREAT show today. (6/25/08)

A link to listen to Dennis Miller on the 'net was labelled as "wash1700". That made me curious as to what station in San Diego would call itself "wash". Turns out the link is "cash1700". Go to the web page and there's no mention of the call letters. Go to the FCC and lookup to find it's XEKTT from Tijuana. But, in the process of searching, find an application for a 250 watt daytimer on 1700 in Jackson, CA. What happened to the expanded band being restricted to 10 kW day and 1 kW night? Are they going to allowing the trashing of that end of the band? Dave Loudin: got an answer? (6/25/08)

It's good that the Washington Nationals will have Spanish-language radio broadcasts. As long as we're at it, Dan Snyder should consider reinstating the same for the Redskins. It's not like Snyder won't have a station available for the purpose. Everett W. (6/25/08)

Dave's response: If Dan Snyder was smart, he'd take some of those six signals he'll soon have (how about 730 and 1260) and put a Spanish sports talker on them. Including the Redskins en Espanol!

Anonymous poster's mailbag observation, "Anyone hear Chris Core now doing ad voiceovers for WTOP!" An even more important observation is that the spots are for clients of his former show on WMAL. So far, Direct Jewelry Outlet, and Virtual Physical have made the jump. I wonder how long it'll take Gutter Helmet, etc. to make the trek to Idaho Avenue? I won't say my prediction has come true... yet. And, there are clients of WMAL who already had a WTOP "voice". Sleep Number Beds (Dave Johnson) is a good example/ However, if DJO and VP have completely left WMAL for WTOP, it'll show Chris Core's value as a personality. With the retention of "Jack Diamond", apparently Citadel is now learning their lessons about doing radio in a market that's bigger than a Vons store. Unsigned Corporate Suit (6/25/08)

OK, folks. We all love Lindsay, and for good reason. But let’s see some votes for Pamela Brown, shall we? She’s beautiful, talented, smart, and overall another great reason to watch Channel 7. Let’s show some love for Pam! (6/25/08)

Dave's response: I have noticed some ballot stuffing for Czarniak - a la a number of votes within a short time period from the same e-mail address or different e-mail addresses with the same name attached to them. But, even with those votes thrown out, Lindsay still has a substantial lead.....

Suzanne, listening to Dennis Miller is via his own web site in real time every weekday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET is your best bet (like the previous poster stated). However, there are other live audio streaming stations all across the U.S. at different hours of the day airing the same show, and you can find that list here: radiotime.com -Silvie- (6/25/08)

(RE: Where to listen to Dennis Miller online) AM 1700 out here in San Diego www.wash1700.com airs & streams Dennis Miller 1pm – 3pm (Mon) 12pm – 3pm (Tue-Fri). That's Pacific time, BTW. You also check their website for other schedule info, since other affiliates may air & stream the show in its live timeslot, 10am - 1pm Eastern time. dennismillerradio.com (6/25/08)

Hello, I used to listen to Dennis Miller via live audio streaming. I think it was the “old jazz radio station” or the “new oldies station”. However, he seems to have been replaced by Sean Hannity. Can I access Mr. Miller via dcrtv.com? Thank you. - Suzanne (6/25/08)

Dave's response: DCRTV just covers local media news. We don't actually stream radio shows. Anyone know of a good location Suzanne can listen to Dennis online?

Re: Would you rather listen to Jack, or lead paint psa’s. I will take an order of lead paint, please! Isn’t that a new channel on XM though? (6/25/08)

To the Mailbagger Re: DCRTV being blocked. DCRTV is not blocked here, GSB has been great with that kind of thing but of course I'm not nor is anyone feeding any inside information to DCRTV about things here. I value my job way too much, I am living a dream right now. I always sign my posts so if something pops up its not from me because the assumption is always its from me. Any press releases like yesterday get approved by my GM....ESRTV was not a failure, I had a great FIVE year run with it. I had to stop because it was a conflict of interest among other things when I started at The B. I made my fair share of mistakes as Editor for stuff which I am still paying the price for but I've learned. But I had a blast with ESRTV and visited a lot of stations and learned so much. I worked so hard on the information, the station history and profiles. I drove thousands of miles for all my ESRTV Tours. I thank everyone for the great feedback. I am more than happy to answer any public information questions about the Eastern Shore, I consider myself a EShore radio historian down here as I mentioned 100 KHI's anniversary sign on date-June 18, 1978...Let me just say re: JJ McKay, Don G, etc, no matter how you feel about them they are and I consider myself as well so blessed to be doing what we love, for some of us it matters not what station, what market. The fact we wake up and love coming into work makes it all worth it and oh being at the beach is pretty cool especially this time of year. -MP (6/25/08)

Today in Washington Social Diary: "To me, what we have in the nation's capital, is the gayest population of straight men." www.nysocialdiary.com (6/25/08)

Dave's response: Or, how about Washington's male TV weathercasters - "the straightest population of gay men".....

Worst commercial of all time - "Robot Ben Franklin" Any other nominees? (6/25/08)

Dave's response: Nope. It's definitely the Glob's Schelby "interviewing" Rosanne for Tahiti Village.....

You said, “I'd take Jack any day of the week.” In search of a lower rung, you prefer the Jack Diamond to the "John Tesh Radio Show." What’s next comparing Jack’s show to lead paint PSAs? (6/25/08)

I would think Jack Diamond knows Jack Diamond and his career better than anyone. But I don’t think he started at a station in Rockville at 16. I believe he started at WNAV at age 16. WINX came the following year. Roddy Freeman (6/25/08)

Regarding the JDMS -- Jack poses a question like, "Who pays on the first date? Is it the man, or do they split the bill?" He answers himself, "Now, this is how we guys see it…." The two ladies chime in with what women "really think." -- If you think that is bad, you obviously haven't heard the drek that is known as the "John Tesh Radio Show". It goes something like this - "Hi - this is the John Tesh radio show. This hour we'll talk about 5 ways to keep your kids safe from the Pedophile down the block. My wife Connie Selleca has tips on how to marinate your ham in 3 easy steps and I'll tell you 6 free things you can get by stealing them at your local grocer. Also at tesh.com - you can see my son Gib wearing a very pointy hat. Now - here's the latest from Savage Garden." I'd take Jack any day of the week. (6/25/08)

So Mike didn't address the news yesterday that his beloved former counterpart in taking the airwaves in OCMD. What are the chances he addresses it today? And also--will CBS try and make a point to compel Ocean 98 management to BLOCK the internet feed? As a fan from afar who was waiting to hear Donnie G. pop up on XM 70s on 7/Sirius Totally 70s in a year or two, I'm still ready to stream his two hour show in my car every day via cellphone/bluetooth. VIVA LA BIG DON GERONIMO! Josh in Palm Beach, FL (6/25/08)

Dave, in the past you mentioned that your website has been banned from a few radio stations around DC and Baltimore, like those Clear Channel stations. Kinda curious, how do you know that is fact or if someone is having fun with you? A friend of mine told me that most radio stations do in fact ban access to other radio sites like DCRTV, radio-info and so forth nor do they allow their employees to post on them. If so then how is Michael Popovec able to send emails to DCRTV without risk of losing his job at "The B".? I assume they don't care which is a good thing. Also a mention was made sometime ago about how well DCRTV is doing. I can see that, its a greta site but it does make me wonder why the other radio-TV sites had failed like the ones the covered Roanoke, Winchester ( who lost two seperate sites ) Harrisburg, Cumberland, Central Maryland and the Maryland Eastern Shore all of whom disappered within a short amount of time. Wonder why those failed? (6/25/08)

Dave's response: I can't verify that DCRTV.com is blocked by some local broadcasters, but I do hear rumors. I think that DCRTV continues to succeed while some other local sites have failed is that I try to keep a very broad, populist feel to the site. And not let it get too "techie." And focus it on all aspects of local media, not just radio. I am always aware that it must appeal to the Average Jane and Joe Listener, and I try to minimize the amount of corporate ass-kissing that you find at some (all) of the trade pub sites.....

Dave, can you or any of your esteemed readers recommend any media/advertising firms that specialize in internet advertising? Or could someone who sells online ads for a radio/TV station get in touch with me -- could mean money in your pocket. Thanks. www.mbarrydc1@yahoo.com (6/25/08)

Was riding the dial the other day and noticed that 106.5 K-Rock out of Pocomoke City, Md. was off the air. Rumor has it that Great Scott has taken the station back from being LMA'd to Mike Powell. Anyone have confirmation or additional information. Also had a pleasant surprise when I heard The Good Doctor back on the air in the afternoons at the small WCTG 96.5 out of Chincoteague Island, Va. Don't know where he's been for the past year, but good to hear him back. For a small station, the signal actually comes in pretty clear here in West OC. (6/25/08)

Anyone hear Chris Core now doing ad voiceovers for WTOP! (6/25/08)

Jack Diamond is to radio, what KFC is to chicken…His show typifies radio’s lack of interesting, compelling or even new programming content. He reruns the same bits over and over, day after day. A favorite one involves gender differences. For example, Jack poses a question like, “Who pays on the first date? Is it the man, or do they split the bill?” He answers himself, “Now, this is how we guys see it….” The two ladies chime in with what women “really think.” Some clichéd banter revolving around stale sexual stereotypes ensues. Jimmy says something stupid and mildly insulting to one of females. In a minute or so, they wrap it all up with a group laugh. Rinse and repeat 50,000 times…Having such low standards for what goes on-air, accelerates radio’s ratings declines and contributes to the industry’s downward spiral. (6/25/08)

The guy who did the Sinatra show was Tony Reneud, and I think my spelling is wrong too. He was the GSM at Q107 during the heyday, and worked for the late, great Ernie Fears. Tony was very close to the Sinatra family, and worked on a number of projects for Frank Jr. His office was littered with Sinatra memorabilia. He was last scene working for the NBA franchise on North Carolina as a VP. (6/25/08)

Having a senior moment here: who hosted the Sinatra-only weekend show on WMAL and what became of him? I remember a name something like "Tony Renault" but Google doesn't seem to know him. (6/25/08)

So the suits at cbs let donnie g. keep the name. that's a nice. I'm sorry i picked on donnie g. so much after hearing the MOM show. Wonder if he told MO about his return to the airwaves? I thought Donnie was going on a cruise of the Mediterranean with Norm Crosby this summer? hey donnie baby if ye be out there Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue album has finally been reissued on CD Hope the station streams! Whats that request line number I wanna hear Yellow Magic Orchestra play "Tighten Up!" And the Monster says hey! RRrrroooaaarrrrr! (6/25/08)

Jack Diamond's new deal is Carson's bane to existance. Surprised he didn't spontaneously explode. Guess the pins in the voodoo doll didn't work Rob. Better luck in 5 years. (6/25/08)

It's fun to criticise and it's fun to hate, and Pacman Jones is still a criminal, but let's focus on the positive: Don Geronimo had a great career, retired with more money than God (more than me anyway) and is now doing something he loves because he loves it (and needs to do it) and it's a winning situation for the station and everyone he will be working with. Thank Jesus that he's not nappy headed like a certain football player. Take it to the post, Don! --- Biff from Burke (6/25/08)

This evening, WMAL's Chris Plante made his 4th appearance within the past month on CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight. Apparently, he's one of Lou's favorite radio talk show hosts. I'm sure that we'll see more of Chris on TV during this election cycle. Maravilloso, Amigo! -Silvie- (6/24/08)

More on Don Geronimo to an OC station is at DelmarvaNow!.com, the online presence of The Daily Times in Salisbury: delmarvanow.com... Bill in Salisbury, MD (6/24/08)

“Why does XM insist on having dedicated radio stations to promote a band's new album or whatever? It did not work with XM-59 LED and Coldplay (at least to me) is not that great of a band to have 30 days of nothing but Coldplay.” Since they’re a “closed” system of subscribers, why not do things like that? People who want to listen to it, can, and those who don’t want to, don’t have to. It’d be different if a local radio station went All-Coldplay for 30 days (I’d shoot myself), but as a promotional gambit for the band on a system with the room to do it, what’s the harm? Are they removing something that you’d rather be listening to? Maybe they’re using it to generate some much-needed revenue… - Aaron in Leesburg (6/24/08)

Dave's response: Look, I'll admit that I am a "closet" Coldplay fan. "Talk" was based on the brilliant German techno-band Kraftwerk. And lead singer Chris Martin (Mr. Gwyneth Paltrow) is a very cool person. Witness his appearance on HBO's wonderful "Extras." But I can't imagine too many people who'd want to listen to Coldplay all-the-time for a month.....

Cool. someone 'called me out' on this IMUS thing."Outstanding Red Team, you get a case of beer for that one" (Apocalypse Now -LOL) What can I say? -I love IMUS. IMUS is smart-rich$-doesn't give a f**k about common life/peasants, like myself I luv him... he is a 'radio god' Amen. "TRIAD_SPOOK" (6/24/08)

Re: "The Washington Post Radio Listings for Thursday, March 24,1966..." - Just how many of those stations DID Ed. Rod work for? -- Rockville Bill (6/24/08)

Dave wrote: "I actually did once buy a quad LP even though I didn't own a quad stereo system. Didn't sound any better than a standard stereo disc....." It was never intended to sound better without FOUR SPEAKERS, simply to be backwards compatible. I treasure my copy of Santana's Amigos, but I've never heard it in 4fonic. Tripping yes, but never in 4. Every time Pacman Jones gets arrested, an angel gets his wings. The Cryptkeeper abides. Now let's go to the videotape. --- Biff from Burke (6/24/08)

Nikki Sixx should have asked Greta how she feels about the current cyberwar between Anonymous and Scientology. She's one of a number of celebrities in the COS fold. Go to xenutv.net for details about other celebs involved in this pyramid scheme masquerading as a religion for tax purposes. And check out actor Jason Beghe's interviews on YouTube about his time in the COS. He made it out. Wish we could say the same for TomKat. (6/24/08)

@Triad_Spook - Listening to Imus and having smarts are a mutually exclusive pairing. You can look up that term at your leisure. (6/24/08)

First of all, it's Natty BOH not BOW. Shows how little you really know about Baltimore. Secondly, I congratulate Don Geronimo and think it's great that he's going to be back on the air doing exactly what he wants to do. How many of us can say that about our jobs eh? Good luck Doni, hope it works out great for you! (6/24/08)

Why does XM insist on having dedicated radio stations to promote a band's new album or whatever? It did not work with XM-59 LED and Coldplay (at least to me) is not that great of a band to have 30 days of nothing but Coldplay. (6/24/08)

Greta wears panties? Every male anchor at Faux 5 is a complete imbecile. Paul (6/24/08)

“How about pre-emptorily laying off the "Don Geronimo sucks" comments…Get a freakin' life, losers, one that doesn't involve jealousy.” To whom exactly are you directing anger? I’m aware of no one here saying that Don sucks. Rather, your rant was a mean-spirited solution in search of a problem. Check out www.angermgmt.com (6/24/08)

I don't know why anyone's surprised that Doni G is pulling out the box of records at WOCM in OC. On his farewell WJFK show, he all but said he was going to do it...he did everything except give the station name and time slot! Best to him as he "plays radio" on the beach...though looking at WOCM's website, I would be disappointed if he didn't poke good natured fun at the name of the station's morning show - "Rude Awakening"...oh, and the show listed in his slot, "Midday Mayhem"... (6/24/08)

RE: "Christ, you people sound like jealous trailer trash sitting outside and nattering away in front of their colored screen door Balmer stoops in their stained house dresses and ratty slippers, chugging away at the dregs of their Natty Bow." Wow-----you summed up Summer in Baltimore!!!! By the way, Don G DOES NOT SUCK! (6/24/08)

How about pre-emptorily laying off the "Don Geronimo sucks" comments before this becomes a Summer School playground for badly behaved 6 year olds? Christ, you people sound like jealous trailer trash sitting outside and nattering away in front of their colored screen door Balmer stoops in their stained house dresses and ratty slippers, chugging away at the dregs of their Natty Bow. Yep, he really broke the rules; made enough money to do what he wants, so he's got a show on the radio for a few hours playing music he likes on a schedule that suits him. Get the rope ready, Maw, I'm a-fixing to lynch me a rich one! Get a freakin' life, losers, one that doesn't involve jealousy. (6/24/08)

Oh great, in addition to Sandi Alexander and EJ Foxx (among others) I have to compete with Don Geronimo in the midday, man this is getting ridiculous. No I'm kidding, welcome to OC radio Don G-I am going to have to step up my game especially during the 12 O'Clock Whatever where we relive old Top 40 Radio like Don will...With all the talk of JJ McKay, meant to e-mail in last week-June 18, 1978 marked the 30 year anniversary of when 100 KHI went on the air and ironically it was roughly 15 years ago when it dissapeared after it had been moved to 95.9 from 99.9 when Benchmark bought it and then later flipped to Modern Rock-The Coast. 100 KHI was one of the first FM Top 40 stations in the market although my sister station 93-5 (Sea 93), now 93-5 The Beach, came on in the mid-60s out of Georgetown, DE. The 100 KHI studios were at the Westward Ho in OC and the tower was in West OC/Berlin and still is, it serves as backup to the current home of 99.9-Froggy...Last Friday I did a 100 KHI tribute during the 12 O'Clock Whatever pulling some of the old imaging out like 'Super Sizzlin Hits', 'Super Hits' and sung jingles and using them as drop-ins, it was a blast. Now those are permanent on my hot key page. Thanks to Rob Lucas (aka Bobby Davis for the old aircheck). Anyway this will be fun! -Michael Popovec (a.k.a Mike Bradley-101.7 & 95-3 The B-www.musicontheb.com) (6/24/08)

Did anyone catch Motley Crue on Greta Van Susteren' show last night on the Fox News Channel. Nikki Sixx closed out the interview by asking a stunned Greta what color her panties were. Now that's hard news...well maybe not... (6/24/08)

Glenn & JJ - Why come here to tout the greatness of your show? Of Elliot Segal, Jack Diamond, Donnie Simpson, Lou Katz, Tony Kornheiser, Jon Ballard, Kirk & Mark, Chris Emry and the rest of the Baltimore and DC's morning shows, who uses this board to tell us all how great or funny or talented they are? That's right, no one. Of the other dozens of morning radio shows on the Delmarva penninsula, who writes on this board about their own show? Only you. When you see something written about someone, it is from a fan or non-fan, not the show host. Then usually a fan or non-fan responds. It is good that you are in radio, doing what you love. I know from being on Eastern Shore radio for 5 years, tv (voice work) for 5 years and clubs for a few more, talent does not carry the weight that connections do. At least that was the case back then. I've dealt with less politics in DC than on the shore. It's good that you have taught and given new kids a break as they start their radio career. That is not uncommon though. Just about every jock I know has done the same. I have done the same. That's just good character. There are a handful of jocks like you who will bum around out there from station to station and be a recognizeable name and local celeb (look into the crystal ball Don Geronimo). Be happy with that. If you are not, put your talent to the test in a large market. If you want people to listen and talk about you, put an ad in the Daily Times or on tv or have a plane stream an ad along the beaches...or here's an idea - just do a kick ass show on the radio that gets your listenners talking. Just as a quick note...hitting the post - not that impressive anymore. Ken U. Smellit (6/24/08)

COULD SOMEONE WITH SOME SMARTS & COMMON SENSE (like myself ;-) PLEASE! TELL ALL THESE 3RD RATE LOCAL RADIO HACKS TO LEAVE IMUS ALONE! IMUS SAID SOMETHING THAT WAS WAY ABOVE THEIR STUPID HEADS, SO EVERYONE OVER REACTS AGAIN... (by the way Sharpton, hows that tax thing? -LOL) LAST TIME I CHECKED IMUS WAS MORE OF A BROADCASTER & MAN THAN ANY OF THESE LOCAL DC-BALTIMORE-LOCAL RADIO HACKS! "TRIAD_SPOOK" (6/24/08)

Quad! I loved the idea of quad in the 70s, and when the Hafler pseudo-quad setup was described (all you need are two extra speakers to go in the back of the room) I was there and I've enjoyed surround sound ever since. Those old quad LPs do show up in thrift stores at times, but remember they never sold very well, so there's not many to find. The "matrix" methods of producing quad LPs (SQ and QS were the biggies) produce a pleasing effect through a Dolby Pro-Logic decoder, found in most of today's "home theater" systems. The matrix systems were supposedly compatible with FM broadcasting, too. I was always intrigued by the RCA CD-4 system because of its technology, but for the same reason it was far too expensive for me. Those CD-4 quad LPs were designed to sound exactly like the stereo versions (on a non-quad system) by the same method that makes stereo FM supposed to be fully compatible with mono radios. The plan was to make all LPs in CD-4 format, with the quad effects lurking until you could upgrade. But as we know, the quad thing fizzled, to be reborn later as Dolby Surround for home theaters. IIRC, Isao Tomita made a recording that was meant to be played back with a fifth speaker suspended from the ceiling in the middle of the room. I don't know how that was decoded. But people were having fun with technology at the time. (6/24/08)

Hooray Beer...great analogy. You are so on target. If you play the radio game and stay in, save your bread and plan, you can reach the "good times". Maybe not on the air, I chose the Audio/Video road....and love every moment of it. Come to work (play) when I want, leave when I want..Play daily..lovin life. The mean spirited that choose to only criticize, have no idea. However I will add the opportunities for the good life in the industry have been sharply reduced due to corporate BS-PLB (6/24/08)

Did my ears deceive me? Lindsay Czarniak was on Mr. Tony's show this morning. She looks beautiful even on the radio!!!! Unfortunately, for a few minutes around 0910, her microphone was off, so Mr. T. would ask a question, you'd hear her start to talk from a far distance while his mic was turned down, then 30 seconds of dead air, then him again. This happened for about 4 minutes; a minor thing, but unfortunate for a program on a pair of 50,000 Watt stations + the stick in Frederick. Then again, Ms. C has a 50,000 watt smile. -- Carl in Olney (6/24/08)

You know, its good that good ol Don G is landing at Ocean 98. He is great at his craft, you can argue all you want, but you know its true. He gets to play on the beach (literally), spin the hits and is making a few dollars on the side. If he could land at any station, WOCM is ideal as thier format is as close to free form radio as you'll get. Plus-they have a decent signal to boot. Oh-by the way, some of HAVE worked on the beach, played in the sun, but got sick and tired of shotty management and ownership there! Sometimes, when it comes to getting your paycheck on time-hey-corporate radio has never issued a paycheck that has bounced yet!!! (6/24/08)

REF: At the risk of opening a can of worms, why do people get so nasty with each other on here? Answer: Because all of the wannabees and gonnabees are jealous of the has-beens who have worked their asses off, saved their money and get to move to the Ocean and work part-time at a station that lets them do what they want to do, have fun on the radio i.e. Don G. (WOCM) and JJ McKay (WEES) having fun in the sun….eat your hearts out mean people. Smokin’ Cigars and Gazing at the Stars, Life on the Beach is great, huh? Can I have another Red Stripe please, Hooray Beer !!! (6/24/08)

Dave's response: The only thing missing from Don's announcement this morning was the radio band. Killer beach radio has got to be on a "hot processed" AMer like WFIL 56 or WABC 77. Playing the hits on FM just ain't quite the same.....

Dave thanks for tipping us off on the Geronimo interview - it was great. Good to hear Don talking about radio so openly. Im one of those guys who slams him one day and would tune in and listen & dig his work the next. Regardless, Geronimo cannot be denied when it comes to radio. The guys passion just pours through like a true radiophile. Don announced at 8:35AM that he is going to start working on WOCM! GERONIMO IS BACK ON THE AIR! Great interview. Anyone who loves & appreciates radio has to have respect for this guy. Looking forward to hearing his show on OCEAN 98 starting in JULY 7! Perrynoid (6/24/08)

(snip) Bill Hess had to choose between Clear Channel, Dan Snyder or Air America. (unsnip) In all fairness, where else is there left to go? Citadel? Cumulus? CBS? XM? Who's hiring? Salem will make you a $12 board-op and that's about it. When its time for me to get out, I'm jumping clear across the street into TV engineering. At least there is some room for growth and experience in that field. (6/24/08)

O.K..FOX5 really needs to get some estrogen back on the morning broadcast. With both Allison and Gurvir absent, it seems like a "boys night out" on there. It reminds me of the days when Lark was off and it seemed like the rest of the anchors/reporters just went wild. I came in on the end of a segment that Holly was doing and by the look on her face and his apology, Steve Chenevy had said something that appeared to be inappropriate. Anyone see that and know what he said?.. (6/24/08)

George Carlin worked as a dj at KJOE in Shreveport, LA while in the Air Force, and later at KXOL in Fort Worth, TX before heading off to Hollywood. (Source: Wikipedia) (6/24/08)

Hi, Dave. What memories on DCRTV Plus!!! Out in old KC (Kansas City), we had the same set up with the In Concert show where we could listen to it on the FM radio in stereo; I don't remember which station out there did that. Which brings me to this; does anyone remember the quadraphonic records and record players? I wonder if any of these are still around in the thrift stores anywhere? Hmmmm. Ed (6/24/08)

Dave's response: Yeah, "quad" was a big deal for a week or two in 1975 or so. I have an old copy of Forecast FM magazine which lists the DC-Baltimore area's quad stations with a "Q." The classical FMers and the "head" rockers seemed to be quick to pick up on quad. I actually did once buy a quad LP even though I didn't own a quad stereo system. Didn't sound any better than a standard stereo disc.....

WASH-FM HD 2, DC 101's HD signal, and WHFS's HD signal are back as of Monday. - Steve in Burtonsville (6/24/08)

Dave's response: That's a great way to sell HD Radio - have it there one day, gone the next, and back again. Man.....

Don Geronimo... aka Mike Source interview on www.irieradio.com this morning... The radio station at Seacrets Ocean City Maryland. Michael Source will be on the Bull Dog in the Morning radio station talking about his career. On a side note... they are taking bets in Las Vegas as to when Don will crash his "moped." And another side bet as to when Don will be hosting a radio show at IrieRadio.com in Ocean City and it's sister station in Saint Thomas, VI . An insider has been quoted as saying... "It's only a matter of time before Don gets tired of drinking Grey Goose all day and crashes his moped. Ocean City is just too damn boring for Don in the winter and too crazy for him in the summer too keep all that pent up angst too himself." (6/24/08)

At the risk of opening a can of worms, why do people get so nasty with each other on here? (6/24/08)

Has Meester Tony written his last column for WaPo? Or was that over a year ago? No kiss my backside column from Meester Tony? Did Michael Wilbon take the WaPo buyout tambien? Enjoyed Czaban's rant about weatherforecasters? on Mundee edition of Sport's Reporters. How they're so effing wrong most of the time! It's just time filler on the news and cheaper to do than having a reporter go out in the field and develop a story. I still am a strong advocate of don geronimoe's idea of taking off a weathercasters thumbs when they are wrong. We could hold the event on the Ellipse! Anyone got pictures of Robin Meade in a bikini? Does Warner get the Boo of the Week? (6/24/08)

I have so many fond memories listening to George Carlin's album (still play those things)"FM and AM". Good old "Wonderful WINO" and "Coolies". George mentioned that he was a jock early in his career. Does anyone know what station or stations? Another great entertainer who will be sorely missed. Blessings. Joyce Conroy (WHFC) (6/24/08)

Ed Rod may be remembering Steve Allison, "The Man Who Owned Midnight" at WWDC, who had previously served in the same capacity in Boston and Philadelphia. He left Philly, shall we say, with a "dishonorable discharge". Read about his dilemma at: DCMemories.com. His arrival in DC on June 17, 1957 was touted in a WaPost ad that proclaimed "Trouble's in town." See it at: DCMemories.com. A photo in the January '58 issue of TV-Radio Mirror showed Steve to be a real "family man", as you can see at DCMemories.com. Finally, there is a fascinating and hilarious online article by Sam Smith entitled "THE CANARIES IN STUDIO A" about WWDC during that era at: prorev.com. The quote Sam attributes to Steve Allison concerning his troubles with the law will crack you up! Allison continued his show at Radio 1260 until March 1967. He died in Los Angeles on March 6, 1969 of cancer at age 53. (6/24/08)

Dave...What are the chances of Farid Suleman being named "Broadcast Executive of the Year"? Stock price a buck and change and plunging, ratings in the dumps, and now another predictable Imus mess! The guy is a F***ing genius! Big Citadel Stockholder (6/24/08)

I thought you all might like to know that the third round of the Baltimore Sports Media Approval Ratings is live at The Loss Column. This week's subject is none other than Anita Marks, who is doing...shall we say...not so well in early voting. That can change fast, though, so cast your vote and join the discussion at: www.thelosscolumn.com (6/24/08)

I think it's been almost TWO MONTHS now that WNUV-DT The CW Baltimore has been out of sync and skipping in primetime @1080i Is there really no solution to this? And no one ELSE notices this? (I'm in Baltimore County though, it's possible this is Comcast's fault and The CW is fine on other systems) I just wish someone else would confirm this so I can reast easy that I'm not losing my mind and that my expensive HDTV set isn't broken. (6/24/08)

Come on Mister "2 Major markets" Guy being so critical of JJ.... Name yourself and the "2 Major Markets" JJ is on a little station which RIGHT NOW is reaching the second largest market by population in Maryland... The summer time market in Ocean City is second only to Baltimore when it comes to population. And you know what makes the show an amazing amount of fun???? .... There is NO ONE looking over our shoulders counting the beans!!!!!!! And we can do ANYTHING we want (within FCC regs) .... Can you say that????? Do you have a set format??? We don't, We change it up every day BECAUSE WE CAN!!!! I have been on 4 stations now being JJ's sidekick, For me the show we are doing now is 2 hours of hanging out with a friend, And just saying whatever comes to mind.... The freedom is amazing, And while I do hope to be doing my own thing on radio some day .... The last 4 years of being in the chair next to the Hitman is something few have had the honor to witness, We do it live without a computer with just a mixing board, 2 cd players, And 2 mics.... JJ is a master at the controls, Anyone who takes the time to listen (And I doubt you have) Would think he was voice tracked, He segways into songs hitting the mark almost every time, And the few times he doesn't we laugh about it and move on .... And I am enjoying every morning that I am on the air with him. MY NAME IS Glenn Samuels. MY E-MAIL IS beachbum@barefooted.com you can listen live at www.wees.org (6/24/07)

I PROMISE, Other Ed, if you go back to 1965-66, the "rock and roll" that "Tige" was playing in the WWDC Satellite Studio would have included the likes of the Seekers, the New Christy Minstrels, softer Beatles material, almost no Motown, no Kinks or Yardbirds. WWDC was what we called "Chicken Rock." Even when Carroll James played the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand," it was more of a demonstration of the group that was exploding throughout Europe and the British Isles. It was NOT indicative of the WWDC format. It's driving me crazy trying to remember who did the talk show. It came on at 10 and I'm thinking that it may have been the late Allen Douglas before he went to KYW/WKYC in Cleveland. If Winston Cargill is reading this, he'll know. He was a summer relief board-op there in the summer of 1966! I know that the talk show started before 1965 because my sister and her friends were complaining about it when she was going to B-CC High School in 1964. Jeez, this is getting ti be too much like work. Somebody hand me another Cuba Libre! - Ed. Rodriguez (6/24/08)

It was amazing to me that in the archived tribute to George Carlin, they missed his famous football versus baseball monologue. It's just as funny as the "Who's on First?" routine of Abbott and Costello. Oh well, George did cross the plate and now he's home. (6/24/08)

Pity poor Marc Sterne. Instead of Mr. Tony, sympathetic listeners should sent "Nigel" the Johnny Walker Blue. He'll need it. Tina in MoCo (6/23/08)

Ed. Rodriguez said about the March 24, 1966 Post radio listings, "WWDC was Contemporary Middle-of-the-Road or Adult/Contemporary, with a Talk show at night." I recall hearing Tiger Bob Raleigh on WWDC playing Top 40 after dark from the remote trailer at Glen Echo Amusement Park in the summer of 1966 (and I saved my Pepsi bottle caps). I think the MOR and talk came later. Also, those listings didn't show WTOP-FM; odd, given it was owned by the Post at the time. s/ Another Ed (6/23/08)

In whom should we be more disappointed, Pacman Jones for his 6 arrests, or Imus for not figuring out that he was colored? Jimmy the Greek was robbed, I tell ya! Biff from Burke (6/23/08)

Charlie-At least you signed your name...First at least own up to what you said or don't you believe in what you wrote or spoke...I'm not personally offended and would not have cared but I know a lot of women who find the word very offensive and that school is made up of 65% females if I am not mistaken. In addition, speaking at a college graduation ceremony, an educated person speaking to an educated crowd could probably have used a different word...I am not turning this into a political thing, my point was any speaker at a graduation ceremony should not preach one's politics liberal or conservative because that is not the proper platform to do so...BTW, why do you assume I like or am voting for McCain, how do you know I am not writing in a candidate. This is a media board why do I care who the hell you are voting for? Save your politics for another website! -MP (6/23/08)

I'm saddened by the news of Marion Hales's passing. He was the voice of reason during the writing of the specifications that resulted in buying the Marconi transmitters at VOA. He was a smart, witty, and friendly person to work with (I was in the group that detailed the requirements for new antennas). People like Marion often pass by without notice, so I'm glad Chris thought to mention him here. Regards, Dave Loudin (6/23/08)

WDCW-DT 50 to 1000 kW ND. WFPT-DT 28 to 41.2 kW DA. WPXW-DT 34 to 1000 kW DA. WUTB-DT 41 to 310 kW DA. WMPB-DT 29 to 42.6 kW DA. (6/23/08)

Hi Dave, Your bit: AFP's Peter Mackler Dies you walk about how Tim Russert had a "state" funeral. I agree that there was too much coverage of Tim's passing however there is one slight difference between the two. Tim was known all over the world because of his connection with NBC and Meet the Press...but who ever heard of this guy except the people that worked for AFP and some people overseas. I am afraid you are comparing Apples with Oranges. Press coverage depends on how newsworthy a person is. I am sure you would not expect wall to wall coverage if you died??? Stephen L Blackburn (6/23/08)

Dave's response: I'm not saying that Mackler should get the same TV coverage as Russert did. I'm just pointing out the great difference in coverage when two DC-based journalists of the same age die of the same thing at about the same time. Oh, I have already arranged to get coverage of my "final festivities" via Count Gore De Vol's internet stream at countgore.com.....

Anyone know how Ed Norris is doing in his new time slot? (6/23/08)

To the individual that is battling with JJ. You get paid to do what you love, you're in two major market. SO WHAT! A lot of us have been in the majors for decades, love what we do and don't take shots at seasoned Vets. JJ has certainly paid his dues, certainly contributed to beginners as all of us do that care. Why don't you go into a business that fits your personality, (Johhny on the Spots) distributor. BOBB (6/23/08)

("As a graduate of Loyola College, Leslie Stahl most certainly owes the college and its grads an apology. -Michael Popovec") Hey Mikey, It's just a word. So, don't whine and cry and yes, don't be such a pussy. BTW. It's funny to hear people like this label you as "peddling a liberal agenda" because you're for healthcare coverage for everyone, increased taxes on the very wealthy (as supported by Mssr. Gates and Buffet), an end to our intervention in Iraq, improved CAFÉ standards, strict product safety regulations, and ending of big oil tax subsidies. Pop, you may call this a liberal's agenda; I call it a personal one. And, I will be promoting MY personal agenda by putting Obama over the top this November. Sorry John McSame. -Charlie (6/23/08)

Well said, Chris - Alexandria. I was going to write something similar, but you said it better than I could. I'm with you (unlike Dave) in having no problem with the coverage of Tim Russert's death. Because someone was the same age and apparently died the same way, does not mean coverage of their passing should be equal. Today's Ridiculous Rant on that subject makes no sense at all. -- Bobbie (6/23/08)

Gee, JJ...it's nice for you to mention that you mentor people who want to get into the radio biz "at no charge". Do you also include free advice on how to use their so-called reputation to manage clubs when their radio career is shot to hell and nobody will pay them any more to work in the biz in that "no charge" session? (6/23/08)

Dave, I'm not sure as to the point of your 'rant' regarding the death Peter Mackler from AFP. No offense to Mr. Mackler's family, but I guarantee most people don't know of either he or AFP. I'm to assume that you are part of the camp that feels Mr. Russert's death was too publicized by the mainstream media. Personally, I didn't have a problem with the coverage, especially NBC, as he was an important figure in the way politics are covered. For you to use Mr. Mackler's death as to further your point on the coverage of Mr. Russert's death is, quite frankly, lame. You can do better than that, Dave. Thanks, Chris - Alexandria (6/23/08)

Waaaah! Leslie Stahl said a bad word. Waaaah! Grow the fuck up, people! Like ANY college grad didn't utter that word in the last hour. LOL! Did the evil word physically hurt you? Did you go drink in excess to wipe that awful, awful word out of your mind? No. Leslie Stahl has NOTHING to ''aplogize'' for. Paul (6/23/08)

Dave, As always, nice site. I just have to laugh when you goof up like you did this morning, with the "Mike and Mike" blurb. LOL… just delete it off the page and hope nobody saw it? Typically I thought you would have issued a correction in a separate post. Or even modify the existing blurb. But delete it in it's entirety? Not cool! Before you check your records, no I'm not a DCRTV Plus supporter but YES, I have contributed in the past (once, like two years ago). Thanks for the great site again!! PS - like two months ago HOT 99.5 let slip some cusswords from a caller on the KANE morning show… I was listening to it. I was waiting to see something about that on DCRTV but never saw anything… maybe you didn't know about it. Guess I should have "reported" it? (6/23/08)

Dave's response: A "Mike and Mike" blurb this morning on DCRTV? You must have dreamed it. I don't remember anything about that. And, as I've said before, I can't listen to every radio station all the time. I do depend on "DCRTVers" to tip me off about stuff like a Kane caller allegedly shouting expletives on the air.....

If Mr. Popovec is going to criticize Lesley Stahl, at least learn how to spell her name. (6/23/08)

I got off at the Friendship Heights METRO station last Wednesday (6/18), and I noticed on the locator maps that WRC is still listed as a "TV-Radio Station" on Nebraska Avenue. (6/23/08)

Dave's response: Wendy Rieger Radio. It comes through on a "mental frequency" within 2 miles of the WRC-TV complex. Oh, nevermind. They're coming to take me away, ha ha.....

As a graduate of Loyola College, Leslie Stahl most certainly owes the college and its grads an apology. Why she thinks she can get away with once again proves the arrogance of the so called elite news media. I'm sure she also probably got around to peddling her liberal agenda somewhere in the speech just like Senator George Mitchell did at my graduation. -Michael Popovec (6/23/08)

In 1967, I was in a Saturday morning league for teens at the little bowling alley near the Roller Rink and WPIK in Alexandria. One time after burning up the lanes, I wandered over to WPIK and Jay Perri let me come in and watch him work. They were definitely playing Pop/MOR at that point. I think they flipped to Country in the spring or summer of 1968. So, it's quite possible that WPIK was playing Pop tunes in 1966. Finally, a memory about George Carlin: He used to appear here in San Diego once and sometimes twice a year, most recently about seven or eight months ago, I think. I guess since it's relatively close to Los Angeles, he would come down here to break-in new material. It seems like every time he was in town, I wouldn't hear about it until afterwards and this last time I promised myself to watch the newspaper ads so I'd be ready to get tickets. The first time I saw him was in 1973 at Shady Grove Music Fair in Gaithersburg. That was the first time I had seen anybody perform "in the round". The second time was 1994 or so, in Tulsa Oklahoma. I remember that show because there were a few walkouts - when he did some lines about abortion laws. I'm not sure why someone would even go see Carlin, if they were so easily offended. Then again, my older brother went to see Redd Foxx at Shady Grove, back when Sanford & Son was a big hit on TV and apparently a busload of folks from a local church got up and left en masse, not knowing that he was pretty filthy onstage! Damn! First Russert and now Carlin. June hasn't been a very good month for the Irish! - Scott Marinoff (teen idol in the 60s - still idle, here in the '00s) (6/23/08)

"Over the past two days, I have heard a faint signal on 87.9 MHz in the Columbia area. It has consisted of two women speaking Spanish with occasional Spanish music. It sounds like produced programming rather than a run-of-the-mill pirate. Anyone else hearing it?" Yup, that's the audio for low-power channel 6 in DC. First time I heard it in classic Rockville, I thought I was hearing some excellent TV DX, but alas, it was not to be. Mike in Frederick and the Dashboard DX Society, remembering the most excellent George Carlin… (6/23/08)

Damn! I need an editor!! It was definitely an Ampex 350 that had enough room on top of the head stack housing to attach an EditAll or the much better Nagy block. An Ampex 250? Sorry! Regarding ‘MAL-FM’s classical programming… When they ditched classical in favor of “beautiful music” they gave away the library of classical Lp’s and many of them wound up at my place. Bill Trumbull might remember the changeover date. Tom Gauger (6/23/08)

The world is a less funny place today. With the passing of George Carlin, we have lost a legend. A man willing to stand up to the hypocracy of government censorship while touting "First Amendment rights" to its citizens. Carlin exposed the FCC for the oppressive organization it is and showed that when it comes to a choice between censoring its people and defending the Freedom of Speech, the government will choose censorship every time. (6/23/08)

For what it's worth, (and acknowledging the skepticism about accuracy), the Washington Post radio listings showed "Classical Music" as WMAL-FM's format through Friday, August 11, 1967. On Monday, August 14, 1967, the listing was revised to read "Variety stereo" which continued through Monday, November 23, 1970. In the Tuesday, November 24, 1970 issue, the listing was revised to "Progressive, contemp." During their classical years, WMAL-FM took listener loyalty seriously by publishing and distributing a monthly listening guide. Perhaps the beginning of the end came in March 1967 when WMAL-FM discontinued their listening guide and relinquished that task to Forecast FM magazine. (6/23/08)

Ed is exactly right in observing “The radio listings at the Post never have, and never will, change.” Another example: For years after NBC changed the call letters and then sold WRC AM, the newspaper insisted on perpetuating the incorrect callsign long associated with 980Kc. It was deliberate. I spoke with the writer in charge of the column, who told me the station called itself “WRC” so that’s what it would remain. I said, “Well how about if I call the GM of WRQX and have him insist that you start listing them as Q107, which they’ve been using for years?” I was told, ‘That’s different.” (6/23/08)

You know, all this arguing about the FCC's indecency. Why can't the FCC focus on media ownership, EAS, AM stations that are breaking the laws and leave indecency along. You go to Europe and there is no problem with indecency. Americans are so damn uptight. We do not parent our kids as well. If there is an offensive program, turn off the channel. There are 200 other to choose from. We know, when the government gets involved, everything gets screwed up! (6/23/08)

Hey Mr. McKay: First of all, I don't eat cornflakes. And I am in the business, in two major markets, GETTING PAID to do what I love. (6/23/08)

Dave's response: I get "laid" to do what I love - this site. Ha ha ha. Oh, nevermind.....

Ref: McKay in the Morning – Dave I think you would agree that 39 ½ years in the radio biz, I’m not looking for an ego stroke, I value your readers who are in the business that give others who care about the business feedback. I understand that Gurvir Dhindsa has been MIA on the morning broadcast. Has anything been said on air about her absence?..I hope she's not having problems with her pregnancy and just on vacation. Anyone know? (6/23/08)

Good day, everyone - Tomorrow is our last Q&A Cafe until September, and it is with "Counselor" author Ted Sorensen. It is sold out. If you have a reservation, please remember to reconfirm with Jon Moss today, especially if you cannot make it, because we can then take someone off the wait list. His number is 202.338.2000, and he'll be available after 10 a.m. You may have noticed an item in the Reliable Source column last week about Nathans' building being for sale, the starting price $18 million (plus another $2-3 million for renovation, and more for taxes and insurance). Tis true. If you know anyone with crazy money who would like to buy the building to keep Nathans at Wisconsin and M, please call Jon. Wish us luck. Thank you, Carol (6/23/08)

Dave the Mike and Mike on ESPN radio Is Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic not Mike and The Mad Dog based In the New York market which Is who the problem appears to be with. (6/23/08)

Dave's response: Thanks to you and all the others this morning who pointed that out. I'll stick it on the NYC news page. By the way, there are too many "Mikes" in the radio biz. It gets confusing sometimes.....

That is not the Mike & Mike show on ESPN, that is Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic. That show on WFAN is Mike and the Mad Dog. Hope the realiable source doesn't see this. (6/23/08)

Dave's response: Ha ha ha. You know, when I make a mistake, it gets corrected immediately. Not like the Washington Post running "Greaseman" as the format for 1160 six-plus months after he left the station. Sheesh.....

If Tom Gauger says they were playing Classical on 107.3, I believe him. But Rob, which ten years are you referencing? Also, Tom, am I not correct as describing the music as infused with Broadway and Hollywood show tunes and fare light enough to be considered Beautiful/Easy Listening? I seem to recall a much less serious product than the music and presentation of WGMS. And, before we get too carried away with The Washington Post's listings, let me point out that their record of inaccuracies rivals that of today. First, in the AM listings, the then-new WLMD in Laurel is listed as WJMD and WWDC is listed as playing "Rock'n;Roll/Pop Music." WWDC was Contemporary Middle-of-the-Road or Adult/Contemporary, with a Talk show at night. WPIK is listed as playing "Pop Music." They were the closest thing to "semi-Classical," and on the brink of flipping to Country. WHRN's listed "Pop Music" was actually Beautiful/Easy Listening. The radio listings at the Post never have, and never will, change. - Ed. Rodriguez (6/23/08)

The Washington Post Radio Listings for Thursday, March 24,1966 might refresh a lot of memories, including Ed Rod's. You want Classical? We got classical... on WGMS-FM, WMAL-FM, WASH-FM, WHFS-FM, and WWDC-FM! Even WQMR-AM was considered "semi-classical". I can't produce earlier evidence because the Post radio listings through Monday, March 21, 1966 were limited to a station's calls, frequency, and hours of operation... not the station's format. (6/22/08)

McKay in the Morning – all feedback good/bad appreciated – Weekday Mornings 6-8am... On the web www.wees.org... Commercial Free – Community Radio 107.9 Ocean City, Md. (6/22/08)

Ref: Dave's post in the mailbag...102.7 FM Classical music in the 70's...was WCAO-FM and I believe the next calls were WXYV...V-103 urban. Then it became V-102.7 and became WQSR when it moved from 105.7 to 102.7. (6/22/08)

Tom is probably remembering the Ampex 350. www.scottymoore.net... The head stack had a "gate" that you would pull toward you during FF and REW to lift the tape off the heads. On top of that stack housing, an EditAll splicing block allowed a dandy place for you to have at it with grease pencil and razor blade. Ah, the days of physical edits. (6/22/08)

(”Ditto with WMZQ's and WBIG's, too”) (6/22/08)

Another HD station that is off….WHFS in Baltimore – Steve in Burtonsville (6/22/08)

Their HD-2’s are off if they are still operating on their back-up transmitters. The FCC mandates that if a station is not operating on their main analog transmitter, at their main site, they must shut down their HD transmitter as well. Since they suffered damage at their primary site during those terrible storms about 2 weeks ago…they are still likely on their backup, thus their HD must remain off. (6/22/08)

Dave's response: Still, someone probably just spent their hard-earned bucks for an HD Radio only to find no HD2 channel on four of Clear Channel's five DC area FMers.....

Mike O'Meara is a TRUE magician. He's making his radio career disappear. Paul (6/22/08)

thanks tom... WMAL FM did indeed broadcast classical music for some years, pete jamerson was an announcer. I do remember Hardin and weaver in morning but not Grant in the evening. Believe that the station was classical for over 10 years. rob (6/22/08)

I remember WMAL-FM doing classical music in 1968 when I started at Evening Star Broadcasting. That format soon evolved into good music and John Lyon and I (among others) did voice tracks for their “automation.” The automation at that time was a room full of turntables presided over by John Nagy, if my memory serves. (Incidentally, Nagy invented and sold a splicing block that you could easily mount on top of an Ampex 250 for editing.) Tom Gauger (6/22/08)

I am saddened to announce the death of Marion Hales. His name is probably unfamiliar to most of the folks in commercial DCRTV broadcasting. Marion was an expert in the field transmitters, and had an unrivaled understanding of the various brands of high-power, and super-power transmitters employed by the International Broadcasting Bureau (VOA) around the world. One of the dwindling number of old time gentleman broadcasters, Marion was a gentle soul, generous and kind, who was always available 24 hours a day for consultation. Marion Hales was largely responsible for helping the rest of us tame the temperamental Marconi transmitters purchased during the Reagan Administration. He will be laid to rest this week in his home state of North Carolina. He was a good person, and good friend, and a fine radioman. Heartfelt condolences to his lifelong friend and wife, Judy. He will be sorely missed by all of us that knew him. Chris Telladira (6/22/08)

Regarding my previous post on HD radio, I discovered that it isn’t as bad as I thought. Big 100 isn’t running their HD signal, DC 101 turned theirs off a few days ago, and WASH-FM dropped their 2nd channel a few days ago too. I was able to use the JVC HD radio adapter I just got installed in my car for reference to figure all this out (BTW, the JVC unit sounds great and has a strong tuner). WJZW nulls their signal up my way too, and the HD signal started dropping out on me in the car as I left DC and entered MD. Past the Beltway, it was mostly gone. Also, WINC-FM told me their signal in fine, but I’m probably having signal problems due to foliage. Strange because I haven’t had problem in previous summers. Maybe it’s caused by WERQ’s HD signal as I had trouble with 104.1 right after 104.3 fired up their HD signal. Does anyone know if WERQ just turned theirs on recently, or has it been on for awhile? – Steve in Burtonsville (6/22/08)

Dave's response: You're right. Just checked and DC101's HD signal is gonno. Ditto with WMZQ's and WBIG's, too. WASH is still running an HD signal, but its smooth jazz HD2 is gone. Only Hot 99.5's running HD and an HD2. What's up Clear Channel? HD Radio - one big fat fucking rip off, huh!

Rob, I think you are confused. I never recall hearing classical music on WMAL-FM. Prior to 1966, I recall WMAL being completely simulcast on AM and FM. After the FCC mandated split programming, they ran Harden and Weaver on both stations, then beautiful music until Felix Grant came on with jazz in the evening. At midnight, the station would continue playing beautiful music on FM as the AM broadcasted Bill Mayhugh's all night show. My first recollections of rock experiments on their FM are around 1968, but I never recall classical on 107.3. Am I right, Dave Sproul? - Ed. Rodriguez (6/22/08)

More on 98 Rock / Indie - Turned out that they had just flipped the main signal on Saturday morning. Not sure if that’s a regular occurrence or not. My wife really enjoyed it. Haven’t listened to 98 Rock much since Lopez died – his daughter sent a very nice thank-you note when I contributed to her scholarship fund. (6/22/08)

Dave's response: 98 Rock runs its HD2 "indie" channel on the main 97.9 signal on Saturday mornings and the HD2 "classic rock" channel on Sunday mornings.....

WMAL FM How many remember when WMAL FM was a classical station?? rob (6/22/08)

RE: [ " I just don't see how WTNT could air the Baltimore Ravens in '08. There would be too many conflicts with Redskins games " ]........ While I can understand the competitive reasons if you're a filthy rich nutjob like Danny Snyder, I still don't understand the common sense or money potential of EVEN Washington's most popular sports team, The Washington Redskins, airing their games on SIX radio stations at the same time with overlap signals all over the place, not to mention even MORE stations outside the DC area! SHOW ME THE MONEY! I don't see it frankly. Of course Johnny Rockets and Six Flags aren't making money either so I guess the next big question is...... What will Danny Snyder BUY NEXT and financially DESTROY?!?!? :-) (6/22/08)

For a while anyway, WMAL-FM's "the soft explosion" was simultaneously tagged "Music for enlightened heads" in color print ads which appeared in the April 1971 Sunday funnies of the Post and Star. Jack of Falls Church supplies this example from The Sunday Star of April 11, 1971. (6/22/08)

Have you thought of including 45's Jennifer Gilbert in one of the (Hotties) competitions? When do the winners start to square off? (6/22/08)

Dave's response: I will put Jennifer in a future battle. We'll start the semi-finals this fall.....

How many WTOP listeners really cared to hear Core talk about the passing of Tom Powers? I am sure Mr. Powers was a gentleman and did great work, but let's be honest here, how many listeners of WTOP knew who he was and really care about AFTRA? They don't. It's an inside thing. Core knows it. Farley knows it. And they both know that inside material doesn't resonate with listeners. Just my opinion, but Buck wasn't needed on WTOP and Core certainly adds nothing. Give us the news we want, not an opinion of someone who wants to talk about stuff listeners are really not interested in hearing about. (6/22/08)

There's no official announcement yet but I just don't see how WTNT could air the Baltimore Ravens in '08. There would be too many conflicts with Redskins games, pre-games and/or post-games from Dan Snyder's six-station hexacast. Everett W. (6/21/08)

Dave's response: Ravens outlet 98 Rock actually has a better signal throughout much of the DC metro than does WTNT, especially at night.....

Maybe it's my equipment, but Comcast's varying audio levels from channel to channel, or from network to local drop-in, are nothing compared to their analog channels vs their digital channels! (via the QAM/ATSC tuner in my Westy HDTV) Woe upon the unsuspecting PBS viewer who's been listening to WHUT (Balto County West ch 19) and decides to check out MPT Select programming at 67.2 - membrane busting! either the listener's organic one or the speaker cones in whatever audio system gets caught in that maelstrom. While I've chosen the alpha and the omega for best contrast, simply switching from Any analog to Any digital makes for some fancy finger flailing on the remote. When's Verizon bringing the FiOS? (not til 2010 by their own schedule, sadly..) (6/21/08)

I know that this is topic for DCRTV but I just have to comment on the previous post about the possible change in a station's call letters in Chicago to WLS-FM. I guess from the post the station will be oldies with the old WLS-AM jingles, et al. CKLW-FM in Detroit/Windsor tried this same thing a few years back. Anyone of a certain age (alas I'm one) who is from the midwest (I am) or listened to the station at night here on the east coast (where I live now)remembers the "Big 8!" CKLW-FM with the "Big 8" retro format lasted only a few years. Dave, what would you like WMAL-FM to sound like? (6/21/08)

Dave's response: How about WMAL-FM going back to its "Soft Explosion" days of the early 1970s, with adult-oriented rock, folk, and jazz.....

All news stations are reporting a case of a child being abused by her adoptive mother. NBC4 has chosen not to identify the mother because they say that the child would then be able to be identified. However, the other stations have not only identified the adoptive mother but showed her face onscreen. Is this something new with NBC4 or have they always done this when reports of child abuse occur? Ok Mailbagger's, here's another one for the tech savvy - how come when I listen to Indie 979 through it's webstream there's a "pitchshift" that happens every few minutes or so? I used to get mad at the DJ's, but they say it's not them and that it only happens with it's webstream. What I mean by "pitchshift" is that imagine listening to a song on vinyl and manually changing the pitch of a song with the little pitch knob on the right side. If you listen at indie979.com you'll hear it eventually. I actually thought I was going crazy because I kept asking them and getting no response. Now I'd like an answer to their problems so I can listen without HEARING THEM! Now that I know that they're there and it's a computer associated glitch, now I just want to solve the damn problem. A letter arrived today which said, "Dear Comcast Customer, Comcast will be adding five new high-definition channels to its line-up on Wednesday, July 9—ABC Family HD (ch.245), Disney HD (ch.244), WGN-HD (ch.216), WUTB-HD (My Network) (ch.215), and Science Channel HD (ch.217). Also, Gospel Music Channel (GMC) will be added to its Digital Classic line-up on channel 189. In an effort to continue to expand upon its high-definition and video on demand offerings as well as pave the way for other future service enhancements, effective Wednesday, July 9, 2008, digital equipment will be required in order to continue to receive from Comcast the following four duplicative broadcast TV stations out of Washington, DC - WRC-4 (NBC), WTTG-5 (FOX), WJLA-7 (ABC) and WUSA-9 (CBS), as well as AMC. This change will not affect the local Baltimore broadcast television stations -- WMAR-2 (ABC), WBAL-1 1 (NBC), WJZ-13 (CBS) and WBFF-45 (FOX). By making these changes, Comcast is reducing the degree of duplicated programming that exists among the Baltimore and Washington broadcast TV stations, enabling Comcast to continue to deliver the products and services customers want. A majority of customers in Howard County already have digital cable and will continue to receive the Washington, D.C. broadcast TV stations without doing anything, only now they will also be conveniently grouped on channels 193-196 for customers' viewing pleasure." Gee, Comcast, thanks so much for eliminating more of my analog channels thus requiring me to pay you for digital converter boxes to watch and record that programming. And, I will get to pay the same rate but for reduced service. What a deal! (6/20/08)

Just to set the record straight Dave Alan and Jacqui Allen (Alan and Allen) was the morning drive talent at WWIN AM-FM from late 1990 to the summer of 1991.Tracina Grey replaced Jacqui in September 1991 to June 1992. That same month Radio One took over and changed the slogan to MAGIC 95.9. and replaced Tracina with Lawrence Gregory Jones with Dave Alan until he left for Mix 106.5 and was replaced with Harold Pompey and later Terri Avery. Anyway The Lawrence Gregory Jones saga lasted until early 1994 when he joined WMJJ Washington for mornings and Sonny Andre took over at MAGIC 95.9. So that would be mid 1990's......... (6/20/08)

"I am surprised WTOP management let Chris Core do a nice commentary about AFTRA's Tom Powers." You shouldn't be be surprised. First, Chris gets to pick his own topics. Don't know if anyone has passed this along...last night (Thursday) on "Countdown" Olberman addressed this. In doing so he vehemently denied the Post report on behalf of himself and Matthews...and took the reporter to task. In particular he said, bottom line, he has had no conversations with anyone at NBC about the job...and, in fact, considers himself not qualified. Jim Sackett, West Palm Beach, FL (6/20/08)

RE: Radioratingz. I could care less about Chowderheads or Tomatoes. Anyway, Jack Diamond kisses lots of celeb ass during his interviews and then hammers these same people on-air right after the call. For all of Howard Stern’s faults, at least he’s up front and honest with his guests. (6/20/08)

Re: Jack Diamond on www.radioratingz.com. Ok, fess up, earlier mailbag poster. You wrote all the reviews on there, didn?t you? I don?t care about Diamond one way or the other, but I was surprised by just how inane the complaints on that site were. Jack once said a movie got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes when it was actually 5%? Then he used the word ?Chowderhead? on air? Oh?the horror? Seriously, those are the complaints? Jeff - Springfield (6/20/08)

I am not sure Mix 1073 has signed a new contract with Jack Diamond. So, there’s still some hope. If you’d like another way to let your feelings known, there is a radio ratings site where you can post a review of his show. www.radioratingz.com... He has some pretty honest reviews there. We can only hope the suits will take notice. Feel free to leave yours. (6/20/08)

Dave's response: Interesting stuff, including Washington radio show ratings at www.radioratingz.com. Kinda out of date. But see how Mark and Kris did a lot better than Kane's now doing on 99.5.....

"[Tim] Russert, like him or not, made MTP his own show. Now it's time for NBC to create something new." Considering the unique status of Meet The Press as the longest running program on TV (having debuted in 1947), I'd think the network would make every effort to keep it going. Most of MTP's current viewers would probably have a hard time naming the host who Russert succeeded in 1991 - it was Garrick Utley (and I had to look that up). When Lawrence Spivak (the driving force behind the show during its first three decades) died in 1994, Russert was practically the only one on TV who noted his passing and paid due respect - stark contrast to all the media attention lavished on Russert himself over the past week. When he took over as host, the network Sunday shows all employed panels to interview guests - David Brinkley sharing the questioning with George Will and Sam Donaldson on ABC's This Week, for example. Russert can probably be credited with the shift toward having a single host grill the politicians (with panels used strictly for roundtable discussions) on not only NBC but ABC, CBS, Fox and CNN as well. Regarding People Magazine's headline "A Family's Heartbreak" - perhaps a poor choice of words in view of the circumstances of Russert's death? Not only that, but any self-respecting media outlet would be focusing on the man's achievements and impact on TV journalism as opposed to wallowing in his family's grief. Then again, People ceased to be a respectable publication years ago. Mike, Fairfax (6/20/08)

Comcast also clips network programming too--last night they clipped Home Improvement on Nick at Nite to play a pool spot. (6/20/08)

Too bad Mix 107.3 did not get rid of the pile of waste that is Jack Diamond when they had the chance instead of signing him to a new contract. I hope the reduced his pay and not increased it. (6/20/08)

Dave, Sonny Andre was morning host at Magic 95.9 with Mo nique In the early 1990`s circa 1990,91,92. Its not that serious just a minor correction (6/20/08)

From Washington City Paper, Loose LIps: LL’s stroll through the Wilson Building today was a true walk of shame, after getting scooped thoroughly by Mark Segraves of WTOP this morning on Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s questionable political travel habits—to wit, hauling along paid aides and security officers while politicking across the country for Barack Obama. However, if LL’s going to get scooped by anyone, that it was by “Mr. Scoop” Segraves himself makes it almost palatable. So allow LL to give credit where credit is due. And Segraves has affected change, sort of: He is now reporting that Fenty has promised to review his political-travel policy, saying if he’s not “following what [other] big city mayors are doing, then we’ll make an adjustment.” In other word, Mr. Best Practices admits no wrongdoing, only that he hasn’t been doing what everyone else has been doing. Bad on ya, Mr. Mayor! Good on ya, Segraves! - - - "....were first reported yesterday by WTOP Radio." Mark Segraves broke the story, and The Post had to play catch-up. www.washingtonpost.com..... On his show last night, Keith Olbermann angrily denied the NY Post report you mention on your Front Page. First, he explained that Chris Matthews was seeking advice from a person from Pennsylvania about a speech Matthews is to make up there in a couple of weeks and that Mathews was not discussing MTP strategy with an agent. Then Olbermann denied the charge that he has been jockeying for the MTP job, stating that he didn't even believe he was "qualified" to do it. (6/20/08)

Absolutely! Comcast is THE WORST in terms of blasting ads, and also in clipping. They dump in and out of network commercials anytime they please. Complaining to them does Nothing about the problem. And, depending where you live, the ads may be for companies 50 miles away, so complaining there ain't the answer either. AND in areas where there is no cable competition, Comcast has is all sewn up. Keep muting and don't buy the sponsor's products. Do Comcast sponsors read this blog?--Harried in Kville (6/20/08)

Typical WMAR 2, scored Ravens pre-seasons games by accident, no real purpose! GOTTA LOVE IT! HAha! :-) (6/20/08)

I agree about Kane, he's a brief, regrettable shadow of a bad morning show, but so is much of DC. I think the closest thing to a morning show is actually Mike O'Meara doing afternoons. I tend to favor Wease in the AM because music is the center of the show opposed to ELLIOT SCREAMING or Jack Diamond reminiscing, or the Junks talking about how they get free meals at area restaurants (very tacky guys, only amateurs talk about getting comped). But then Wease tries to be a morning guy which just. does. not. work. The Globe puts together a great set, and then they follow it up with crapola. Why not just play good stuff? (6/20/08)

Regarding the NY Post article titled, “CABLE GUYS LUST FOR TIM'S JOB”… www.nypost.com... Leave it the NY Post to publish the conjecture of a devious plot based on one-side of a phone conversation as overheard and relayed by an unnamed “spy.” Despicable is the only word that I can think of. What’s a word for “opposite of journalism?”…yeah, that too. -Charlie (6/20/08)

Dave's response: What's the "opposite of journalism"? Why it's the owner of the NY Post - Rupert Murdoch.....

What? No mention of... Citadel to bring back WLS-FM in Chicago The Chicago Sun-Times reports the fabled call letters of WLS-FM are about to light up the Chicago airwaves again. Citadel Broadcasting plans to ask the FCC next week to turn WZZN-FM (94.7), the "True Oldies" station, into WLS-FM-along with the original logo, imaging, liners and perhaps some more personalities. If approved, the change is expected to take effect June 26. (6/20/08)

Dave's response: Since when did DCRTV start covering Chicago media news? But, now maybe Citadel will flip DC's 107.3 back to its WMAL-FM calls? Hmmm.....

I agree with the gentleman about Comcast volume. When Baltimore's WJZ (Comcast channel 23 in Baltimore County) plays back the CBS Evening News 7-7:30pm (originally recorded 6:30pm-7:00pm), the playback volume is low BUT when the recorded CBS news is over at 7:30pm, WJZ plays Entertainment Tonight and that show's volume is very very low with all spots coming in "over the top" volume wise and I mean loud. I thought it was our tv, but it too occurs on other channels. In this day and age, I would assume Comcast has some sort of volume control that regulates an equal sound for all programs and spots. At first I thought it was some sort of automation volume problem at JZ that when CBS news is finished, it automatically switches to local spots or Entertainment Tonight. Thanks, John in Reisterstown (6/20/08)

To KenInBrooklyn... I don't have a solution for the Comcast mismatched audio levels, but perhaps I have an explanation. Local cable companies like Comcast are given "local avails" by the cable networks which allow the local operator to drop-in their own advertisements at certain times. The difference in audio levels between the network-originated programming and the Comcast-originated local ads can be an eardrum buster! Your only relief may be to telephone the sponsors of those local ads to complain about Comcast's sloppy levels. Tell the sponsor how you are being forced to mute the spots that they pay for. (6/20/08)

Hey Dave, have you or any other MAILBAGGERS have had issues with the volume of Comcast's version of TruTV (old CourtTV), Investigation Discovery (old Discovery Times), the Discovery Channel HD, AE HD, or any other channel on Comcast for that matter? If we were talking all volume levels being on a 1-10 scale, during the show we'd get a 6 with the commercials BLASTING at a 10 (actually, per Spinal Tap, they blast at 11. That's one more!).It's so bad that we now mute commercials on those channels when the commercials pop up. Somebody has to know that this is going on, and there has to be a way to fix it. I don't think it's my TV, since it's a volume problem that only arises when commercials show up and I've checked other TV's in the house and the same problem persists there too. What gives? Don't you think it's counter-productive to make viewers silence the commercials because they're WAY TOO LOUD! It's annoying. - KeninBrooklyn (6/20/08)

Dave's response: Those channels seem to be OK on my Comcast system, although TCM often has "too low" volume.....

I assume that the August 16 and August 23 Ravens telecasts had to be moved off WBAL/11 because of conflicts with NBC Summer Olympics coverage. On August 28, NBC will show a preseason game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins. Why the Ravens had to be moved off WBAL that night is harder to understand. Everett W. (6/20/08)

"Dave's response: Jesus! Why doesn't NBC just bury MTP?" Best idea yet. It was an interesting show, but with all of the cable news and TV news programs, I think that we have Met the Press. Russert, like him or not, made MTP his own show. Now it's time for NBC to create something new. ** I took a day off this week and heard Elloitt in Baltimore. It's irrelevant. Just sounds like a bunch of small market people trying to do a morning zoo. Laughing at everything the host says doesn't make it funny. Sometimes a show that works in DC (or anywhere else) doesn't work in another market. ** I think I'm suffering from Empathy Deficit Disorder. Ed Graham (6/20/08)

Dave's response: I think the Junks on JFK have evolved into a quite good morning show. Over on DC101 (and 104.3), Elliot continues to sound like a morning show parody. Ditto with Kane on Hot 99.5. Heck, Clear Channel is a parody of a radio company.....

Quote; Obama co-sponsored S. 970 which, among many other measures, included a provision calling for labeling the Iranian Guard a terrorist group. He then said he opposed Kyl-Lieberman which, among other things, called for labeling the Iranian Guard a terrorist group, with the phony claim that it amounted to saber-rattling against Iran. End Quote. So, we can agree Mark Levin lied when he said Obama "voted against" a bill? Mark should have done his homework and been more truthful to his audience. Also, Saber rattling is just saber rattling. It never leads to the Bush administration actually invading a country on flimsy reasoning, does it? (6/20/08)

Hey Martin, here's a little tidbit for you...Baltimore IS IN MARYLAND. Oh, and by the way, Baltimore County is NOT part of Baltimore. Jim McKay lived in Monkton which is closer to Bel Air than it is to Baltimore City. Considering Baltimore is right up there with Detroit in crime numbers, I would rather be called a Marylander than a Baltimorean. G.K. in Reisterstown...Baltimore County. (6/20/08)

Dave, Monique will broadcast out of Los Angeles at the studios of KDAY until her studio is finished. She also selected Sonny Andre to be her announcer/sidekick. Andre first teamed up with Monique in the mid 90's during his stint as AM drive host at WWIN FM Baltimore (MAGIC 95.9). (6/20/08)

I had to drop you a quick note to say that I could not agree more with your rant (yesterday) morning (about O'Meara). Some good advice for our friend Mike. I hope he reads it and sees what you're talking about there. Nicely said. On a side note - just wanted to let you know that I enjoy DCRTV. Keep up the good work! - Dave (6/20/08)

Dave's response: DCRTV is one of the most-visited sites over there at WJFK, along with capturedguys.com.....

To answer some of the the questions about the NBC4 studios.... they have the Network News desk where they Nightly News was done a few times. This desk also is for MSNBC and any other Network stuff. Across from that desk is the Network interview scene (known as the bookcase set) that a lot of interviews are done from. They also use Studio A.... which is where It's Academic, Meet the Press and various other shows are done. Studio A also houses many of the other sets when they are i use. On Wednesday, Today was done from Studio A (they brought a set down from New York). Studio B is the local sets. They also have the weather desk and another separate news desk upstairs for back-up. The mistake from Wednesday's Nightly News tribute to Russert was a mistake from New York. According to someone I know at NBC the machine is known to screw up and thats what happened on Wednesday. Everything has been coming from New York for the past couple of years. (6/20/08)

Not sure if this has been posted before, but WMAR 2 has purchased The Baltimore Ravens Pre-Season game package. Of course they'll be on MASN and WBAL radio too. The Ravens have previously been on WJZ, FOX45, and even WBAL TV. I think this is WMAR's first Raven's stint maybe? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. (6/20/08)

Yesterday, WHUT-DT filed for a post-transition power boost, going from their current 100 kW, up to 1000 kW. Here's the filing: fjallfoss.fcc.gov... That's from yesterday's filings. Today (Friday) is the last day stations can file for maximization before risking coverage loss to Class A stations. We'll likely know if other stations (such as WETA-DT) are following WHUT-DT in boosting power post-transition on Monday morning... (6/20/08)

Did ESPN tell lil' danny he better find stronger outlets or they'd yank the programming from Tripe XXX. I asssume on July 1st when lil' danny and the pod people take over WTEM that Dan Patrick show will likely be gone along with Czaban's morning show to make way for wunderful ESPN radio progrums???? Do these shows have a chance of being picked up elsewhere in the D.C. market or lil' danny's empire has reached so far he's the only game in town? You be kidding about O'mirror show right? Even the cool aid drinkers over at RGF have found the MoMMie show quite dull. So when donaldo use to say "college guy" about 'the golden boy' it wasn't going for a laugh because of jealousy but hey this dude actually has a college degree. cbs radio must have a new sales manager in d.c market I notice the ramp up big time with promo and various tired marketing sh8t from the past on a number of the cbs stations. dan mason? WNUV-DT CW Baltimore in Hi-Def has had audio and video out of sync and skipping during CW programs via Comcast for over ONE MONTH NOW! Will the the folks at SINCLAIR or SUCKCAST FIX THIS EVER??? It's COMPLETELY UNWATCHABLE! I'm shocked no one else has complained about this or it isn't a news story. An OVER ONE MONTH technical glitch that makes the CW Network completely unwatchable on an HDTV set is BEYOND INEXCUSABLE no matter who is to blame!!!! Don't they have engineers at Sinclair or Comcast for this kind of stuff ???? Unbelievable. (6/19/08)

Question for those in the know. Why is it when I read a posting about someone from Baltimore (Jim McKay, Monique) that particular person is a “Marylander.” When someone who is within 25 miles of Washington D.C is a DC person, even if they are from Virginia (“DC Area Pixie” Katie Couric.) Jim McKay is a Baltimorean (Loyola High and Loyola College, Baltimore County resident) as is Monique. Both made it well known of their BALTIMORE roots. If they can do it, why can’t you? Martin (6/19/08)

Dave's response: Ooookay, I guess that would make Martin O'Malley the governor of Baltimore, right?

Losing my patience again with the Washington Times. 3 days out of the last 5 I have received the early 1* edition on my driveway. Why?( no reply from cust service) They made a big production of the fact that they were switching to the later 2* edition. I don't like a 9-9:30 deadline for my morning sports, thank you. The paper frequently arrives AFTER the Post. Also, where's the food section? Some people like to read it, yaknow. Yes, the paper costs me less than .10 an issue. I can't help but feel that The Times is not long for this world. Regards Biff (6/19/08)

Dave, today's rant! It's a beautiful day, get out and enjoy it. It's fun to hate, but jeez. Mike OM show has too much product placement? Longtime listeners remember BethAnn's real-life lyme (note spelling) disease scare, so the lyme guy made sense. The brand of grill that you were trying to avoid saying was "Weber" but they weren't from a "Weber Grill" store, it's just a standard thing that Americans say. Remember the shilling for Diet Cherry Vanilla Coke and Grey Goose Vodka on the old Don & Mike Show? Not to mention Cadillac Escalade and Tivo (Tivo by the way does not advertise, at all; they depend on word of mouth). In less than a week you wrote the following two contradictory statements: "Yeah, we know that radio ad sales are down in the dumps of late, and WJFKers are fighting like hell to return the station to its "superstation" revenue status" AND "If the Junkies want to seriously beat Elliot they're going to have to cut the ad load on their show. Way too many annoying commercials." So which is it Gooroo? Too few ads or too many? Or do you just enjoy complaining, like me? --- Biff from Burke (6/19/08)

I agree with your rant on Mike O’Meara. I think it has been very smart and funny. I am very pleased and have gone back to listening in the afternoons. I was a fan of D&M’s from the earliest WAVA days, but thought the show got real stale and stuck in a rut over the past several years. I always thought Mike was the funniest thing about the show, but I failed to foresee him making it a smart show like he has. That has been a most welcomed change. The one poster saying he talks too fast and talks over people is actually right. He could work on that, but it doesn’t ruin the show. I haven’t noticed all the endorsements, but I have no doubt you are right on that. And you are right that he should resist that as much as he can. He may be in no position to do that now, but give him a few good ratings under his belt and he may change. The bottom line: Good job Mike! I look forward to seeing you and show evolve. (6/19/08)

Over the past two days, I have heard a faint signal on 87.9 MHz in the Columbia area. It has consisted of two women speaking Spanish with occasional Spanish music. It sounds like produced programming rather than a run-of-the-mill pirate. Anyone else hearing it? (6/19/08)

I tuned to 60 kHz but heard the usual WWVB time code coming from the NIST station near Fort Collins, CO. Perhaps Dave meant to say WWVB-FM? (6/19/08)

I just spotted meteorologist Steve Rudin on NewsChannel 8. I saw him once before on NewsChannel 8. Here’s his Friendster page: profiles.friendster.com (6/19/08)

Where are all those studios/sets that NBC/MSNBC/CNBC cuts-to in DC? I know that NBC vacated the facility they once had near the Capitol building, a while back. It appears as if there are a half-dozen remote locations in DC, but I only recalll two reallly large TV studios at 4001 Nebraska Avenue (and maybe a small "flash studio" downstairs, near where the film chains & videotape decks were). I once heard that the radio studios that were downstairs, were transformed into offices, so the TV studios/sets probably aren't there. Does anybody know what the configuration is currently like? (6/19/08)

Among names mentioned as possible future hosts of "Meet the Press," I think Andrea Mitchell or Tom Brokaw would be credible selections. They are professional, seemingly unbiased, and good interviewers. A name I haven't seen mentioned that I would like to suggest is Matt Lauer. The Today Show has been pretty much reduced to an hour of news and two hours of fashions, dieting and food preparation, family issues, relationships, musical performances, etc. And Matt Lauer leaves the show after 9:00. He's personable, intelligent and is a competent interviewer. I think he should definitely be considered if indeed he would be interested. -- Bobbie (6/19/08)

Dave's response: Jesus! Why doesn't NBC just bury "MTP" with Russert and just run an hour of "friendly" ads from defense contractors for an hour on Sunday morning. Wouldn't be surprised if Steve Capus is actually considering it.....

Does anyone know what's going on at the Clear Channel Worldwide newsroom in Baltimore? In the 6 months since "Aaron" Rehkopf left there have been now 3 separate newsreaders on WPOC. Tom in Wheaton (6/19/08)

Obama co-sponsored S. Even Dick Durbin rejected that position when he voted for it, as did 76 other members of the Senate. So, in his latest position, Obama did, in fact, oppose labeling the Iranian Guard as a terrorist organization. Mark Levin said he voted against it when in fact he announced his opposition to it. But the attempt to portray Obama as consistently in favor of labeling the Iranian Guard as a terrorist group, and the suggestion that Levin was misleading about it, is a lie. It's no surprise that Media Matters did not lay out the full story as it is a partisan source for Democrats. (6/19/08)

Let’s not forget that Mo’Nique played the hilarious Lateesha Rodriguez in the 2005 “Domino” flick… (6/19/08)

Two things...it's spelled Lyme Disease not "lime" disease...it's named after Lyme, Connecticut where the disease was identified. Second thing...there really isn't anyone at NBC to take Russert's place. David Gregory is a blowbag as is Chris Matthews. Katie Couric? That's just plain pitiful. Maybe they need to recruit from outside the NBC family and look for someone from CNN, ABC or CBS. But knowing NBC they probably will put someone like Anne Curry in Russert's chair. (6/19/08)

Dave's response: I thought the disease was named after the green fruit.....

Just so you know, the story about the Nats dust up, happened back on June 10th, that would be why the post did not have anything on it today. (6/19/08)

Dave's response: Right. It was from last week.....

"According to Media Matters" - now there's a credible source. (6/19/08)

According to Media Matters, during the June 4 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Mark Levin falsely asserted that Sen. Barack Obama "lied to" the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) when he "told them today that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards should be designated a terrorist group after voting against a bill designating them a terrorist group a year ago." In fact, Obama has consistently supported designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, having co-sponsored a bill in 2007 to do that. Obama said he would have voted against the bill Levin referenced -- the Kyl-Lieberman resolution -- because it "states that our military presence in Iraq should be used to counter Iran," not because the resolution expressed the sense of the Senate that "the United States should designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization." Can someone at WMAL get word to Mr. Levin that he misunderstood situation so Mr. Levin can appoligize to his audience for misleading them. Thanks. (6/19/08)

Dave's rant about the the Mike O'Meara Show is right on target. I didn't really start to notice the "product endorsements" until the picnic when it seemed like every other word out of his mouth was "Weber", and it has increasingly gotten worse. Please, Mike, don't let the sales staff run the show! GE (6/19/08)

In a related item to your posting about Monique getting the afternoon slot on WMMJ, I was listening to the Steve Harvey morning show this morning and a lot of his listeners were writing in concerned about Monique's use of the 'N' word. Apparently they did a show together in the Norfolk area and a lot of the people who attended the show were offended by her use of the word during her show and were writing in to voice their concerns. Will her show be syndicated on WMMJ or will it be local? (6/19/08)

Dave's response: Monique's show is syndicated nationwide, but I don't know if she'll be based here in the DC area, like Russ Parr over on KYS. Since's she a local gal, I'd guess so. Anyone know?

Regarding the foul up on WRC last night....I think master control for Channel 4 moved out of town a few years ago. It's unlikely they would have had a train wreck if 'D Control' was still at Nebraska Ave. but if you have to call out of town..... (6/19/08)

Dave.. I'm not sure you caught it last night, but WRC (local) screwed up the end of the NBC Nightly News.. just as Brian Williams had tossed to the Tim Russert memorial piece, WRC broke away to commercials.. and more commercials.. and MORE commercials. Nightly actually NEVER ENDED.. they just went into the next program. I'd never seen anything like it in all my years (25 as a broadcast journalist)... At 11 - the news led with the piece and Vance apologized profusely about the "mistake" that had been made... extraordinary. I'm not sure why they could not have just punched back to the piece - but I'd be interested to know if someone's head rolled.. it was that bad of a "mistake." I'm sure the switchboard and emails at WRC were over the top... But I AM glad they made good. Dave (6/19/08)

David Gregory < Tim Russert. Big time. I can't think of any one newsman or newswoman I hate more than that guy. And by hate I mean have total disgust for seeing his goofy mug on MSNBC. It was that bloated piece of crap that acted so damn "above" and "understanding" when Don Imus was pulled from MSNBC that he got on the air with the Jessie Jackson's and Al Sharpton's of the world and acted like Mr. Imus wasn't a good voice of MSNBC and his views in no way reflected the views of the station. WELL NO F-ING $HIT! Instead of getting on the air and getting on with the news, they talked negatively about Imus all morning. What a kiss ass just waiting to get on and act holier than thou. (6/19/08)

For the commenter who was wondering where Tim Russert lived: He used to live on the northern edge of the Woodley Park neighborhood, but later moved to Spring Valley, up near American U. -jason (6/19/08)

"I don't know where Tim Russert lived" - Right on the border of Glover Park and Cleveland Park in Northwest DC not far from WTOP and not too far from the NBC Bureau on Nebraska Avenue. (6/19/08)

"Rant - 6/19 - The first month or so of the new Mike O'Meara show has been quite impressive". I need to respectfully disagree. Let me say that I have been a big fan of the Don and Mike show since they were on WAVA. And have always enjoyed Mike's role on the show, much more than Don. he is laugh out loud funny with his comments and impressions. But his current show is close to being unlistenable. Mike talks WAY too much. When he has a caller on the phone or conducting an interview, he talks over them constantly. He needs to embrace a minor amount of dead air. When he does interviews, he answers his own questions. a mistake that successful broadcasters just don't make. The best part of the show is when he comments on "news" from Buzz and does his impressions on the audio they play. I'd love to see him do well...mainly because I like him. but someone has got to get him to SLOW DOWN...get him to take a breath. Maybe more Buzz can help slow him down. buzz doesn't seem to get as chatty as Mike and Rob do. (6/19/08)

Dave, the other Regional Sports Networks that Dish Network carries are also mostly part-time HD carriers, that's my problem! If they can carry those, they should be carrying MASN as well. G.K. (6/19/08)

I've been e-mailing Dish Network for about a month now to try to convince them to carry MASN-HD. For some reason, it is the only Regional Sports Network that they do NOT have an HD version of. (My apologies to the poster who is so concerned about which dictionary we use to check spelling...I realize I just ended a sentence with a preposition). Anyway, I I call on the help of my other lowly Dish Network customers -- who are subjected to watching the O's and Nats in grainy, worse-than-regular standard definition -- to please help me in my efforts to convince Dish to add MASN-HD to their lineup. I want to see the Cubs/Orioles games next week in HD, but don't want to move to DirecTV because they don't offer WGN-HD, Travel Channel-HD, 5-Star Cinemax (regular or HD) HBO Comedy or ABC Family-HD like Dish does. I would watch the games on WGN-HD, except I'm pretty sure they will be blacked out, forcing me to watch the pathetic SD picture on MASN Standard. Please help me in my efforts all Dish Network customers! If we can get the World Fishing Network in HD, surely we can get MASN in HD! Please help. G.K. in Timonium (6/19/08)

Dave's response: The problem is that MASN-HD is not a fulltime network. It only operates a few hours a day a few days a week. As you know, Comcast shares it with another existing HD net, Mojo. Hopefully, MASN-HD will become 24/7 next year and get "properly slotted" by all carriers.....

George Will wrote in Time magazine that the Chinese are drilling for oil 60 miles of our shores in leased Cuban waters. Vice President Cheney repeated this talking point several times. Both Sean Hammity, on his "Stop the Liberal Obama Express" program, and Mark (I hate the mainstream media including Tim, Pillsbury doughboy, Russert, on Meet the Depressed), Levin have repeated this factoid, practically daily. The problem is, it is not true. Time ran a correction after learning that the Cubans were leasing some water, but not to the Chinese. Can somebody over at WMAL please Tell Mr. Levin to stop stating this nonsense and scare tactic as a fact, and get word up to Hammity that it is misinformation? I used this board to report Fred's misuse of the word "effete," (he was combining effeminate and elite to come up with "effete," but "effete" means something completely different), and he hasn't used it since. I am hoping somebody at WMAL will read this and get word to Mr. Levin and Mr. Hammity on the abuse of the facts, so they can go on their respective shows and set the record straight-like the liberal Time magazine has already done. Thanks. (6/19/08)

Do you realize that if Mo'Nique landed the other drive time on Majic 102.3, her show could be called "Imes in the Morning"? (rimshot) (6/19/08)

Just as Brian Williams introduced the Tim Russert memorial story last night (Wednesday) at 7:25pm, WRC ran five minutes of ads and promos for the Olympics. We never got to see the story. (6/19/08)

(regarding a previous post) I don't know where Tim Russert lived or his parish, but according to Charlie Rose, the Russerts bought his house when they moved to DC. Rose mentioned this on his Friday night program on PBS, which also included many clips from Russert's visits, over the years, to the Charlie Rose Show. (6/19/08)

I don’t often quibble with the lead story selection on the network news, but today’s CBS lead about Tiger Woods’ knee surgery was befuddling. ABC put the story at the bottom, which seemed much more appropriate. Any thoughts? Bob in Pikesville, MD. (6/19/08)

I too caught MSNBC's Chris Matthews' comments last night about being a "friend" of Tim Russert on MSNBC and had to laugh out loud, because Matthews' very first comments about Russert's death when surprised and with possibly a few drinks in him while in Paris was to immediately state he was "NOT a close friend" of Tim Russert!!! HAha! How amazingly well and quickly Matthews got on corporate message! BRAVO, JERK & LIAR! I'm so glad I posted here on DCRTV about Matthews first comments the other day. Sorry, Chris, but you didn't fool me or anybody. I think I'd rather see Jerry Springer get the MTP gig over Chris Matthews! :-) (6/19/08)

Regarding where Tim Russert attended church, I read that he attended Annunciation, which is on Mass. Avenue, and that he would stand in the back of the church so as not to distract from the service. I think he lived nearer that church than he did to Holy Trinity, but I don't know that for sure. I would also like to add that I was moved by all the rememberances and tributes to Tim Russert, and I think they were well deserved...I do not think the coverage was overdone. One of the best things about all of the recent tributes was the absence of Chris Matthews. I had read somewhere that Tim Russert was not a fan of Chris Matthews, a sign of Russert's good judgment about people, in my opinion. On the Chris Matthews Show last Sunday (in addition to the show carrying his name, his name appears onscreen...including coffee mugs...about a dozen times), in his "tribute" at the end, Matthews called Tim a friend as well as a "competitor" (a true sign of Matthews' arrogance). If Chris Matthews was competing with Tim, I'm sure Tim was not competing with him--he was so far ahead of him, he didn't need to. Chris Matthews and Tim Russert are total opposites...Matthews is arrogant, confrontational, opinionated, and everything is about him. In many of the tributes to Tim Russert, people often mentioned the fact that he listened to the people he was interviewing. Chris Matthews not only doesn't listen, he asks a question, answers it himself, then is ready for the next question he's going to ask and answer, forget there's someone he's supposedly interviewing. The worst thing NBC could do would be to give "Meet the Press" to Chris Matthews. I believe they have better judgment than that...at least I hope so. -- Bobbie (6/18/08)

I see that Tim Russert's funeral was held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown. Anyone know whether he lived in Georgetown and whether this was his regular parish? The question has no deep meaning. Just curious. (6/18/08)

Dave's response: I wouldn't say we have a "dying" industry. DCRTV covers the total local "media" business. Yeah, AM's down and HD Radio never got off the ground, but FM's still doing great. Although, corporate domination of the radio dial has pretty much gutted the localism of it. TV is changing, with cable and satellite booming and broadcast TV going through a big transformation. Not sure what will happen with satrad. Print newspapers are quickly fading away, but their websites are on the upswing. And lots of other blogs and websites, like DCRTV, are going gangbusters. It's a big "mixed bag" out there - like usual.....

Today I read on another website about someone who uploaded a clip from Baltimore's WBFF FOX 45 on to You Tube. According to what I read not only did You Tube yank her video over copyright issues BUT that WBFF also sent her a private message to her throug You Tube demanding she pay $1000 to WBFF or otherwise she would be sued for violation of copyrights. I always thought that when it came to TV ( and radio stations as well ) pulling their content off the web they could only go after the person in charge of the website, not anyone else. Does WBFF have a case with this woman? Before people suggest this is a joke/scam, from what I read she indeed contacted WBFF and they told her they were dead serious and they would do anything in their power they could to collect that money. Unreal !!! (6/18/08)

Dave, Just curious to see if anybody else has noticed that Dan Snyder's radio stations have had a lot of promotions for Redskins training camp that starts more than a month away commercials playing over the ESPN radio Sports Center updates in the evening. Even better, there's been a QUITE A BIT OF DEAD AIR. Not that I really care, but when I want to get baseball scores when the Nats aren't playing and can't pickup WTOP's signal south of Warrenton, it would be nice to get them without any problems. Here's hoping that Snyder and Bruce Gilbert don't screw with the 980 lineup and give Phil Wood more than two hours a week during baseball season. (6/18/08)

With your misspelling and the omission of the word "written" after your word "only," I can see the art of communicating well is dying. As a side note, professional communicators don't use dictionary.com if at all possible. They use an unabridged dictionary. The one most commonly referenced by professionals is Webster's New World Dictionary published by John Wiley & Sons. Garry Wills in the National Review opined this dictionary "has all the modern virtues; It is big, expensive, and ugly. It should be a great success." Dictionary.com, based on Random House, uses too many shortcuts and has many mistakes. Random House dictionaries are issued to second grade students. (6/18/08)
